WAIKOLOA, Hawaii (seminoles.com) - Senior Drew Kittleson shot a one under par 71 to lead the Florida State men's golf team through the first round of the Amer Ari Invitational on the Kings Course at the Waikoloa Golf Course. The event is the season opening event for the Seminoles who are in 15th place in the team standings and only five strokes from moving into the top 10 in the individual standings.
The tournament is one of the most power packed events that will be played this season with 10 of the nation's top 25 teams playing in the field. The field includes five of the top 10 teams in the nation.
No. 24 Southern California leads the team standings with a scorching 17 under par score of 271. The Trojans lead fifth ranked Georgia Tech and fourth ranked Oklahoma by seven strokes. Daniel Mierinicki leads the individual standings after the first 18 holes after he shot an incredible 10 under par score of 62. He carded eight birdies and an eagle in the first round and has a four stroke lead over three golfers with two rounds and 36 holes remaining to be played.
Kittleson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) leads the Seminoles after carding a one under par score of 71. He is in 31st place in the individual standings after carding three birdies and 16 holes at par or better in finishing the first round under par. Kittleson was two under par through his first 15 holes of the afternoon before finishing his final two holes with two bogeys and one birdie.
"I saw some improvements from the fall in many areas and there were also several times where we were not very sharp," said Head Coach Trey Jones. "I know we prepared well and I have been pleased with their focus. I will be shocked if we do not play much better the next two rounds. The important thing is for us to believe in ourselves and our process."
