FSU Goes on the Aerial Offensive in Annual Spring Game

    April 13, 2013
Until Saturday, Florida State's quarterback battle had taken place exclusively behind closed intramural-field and stadium gates. So needless to say, all eyes were on Clint Trickett, Jameis Winston, Jacob Coker and Sean Maguire Saturday at FSU's annual spring game.

And in a 40-24 come-from-behind Gold victory over Garnet, FSU's quartet of quarterbacks had more than a few opportunities to turn some heads -- 86 to be exact. (read more)

    Jameis Winston Named Starting Quarterback

    August 23, 2013
Jameis Winston has been named Florida State's starting quarterback.

Entrenched in a nationally-hyped battle with teammate Jacob Coker throughout the duration of FSU's fall camp, Winston was officially revealed as the Seminoles' No. 1 signal caller in a post-practice announcement by head coach Jimbo Fisher Friday evening.

Winston, a heralded redshirt freshman and former five-star recruit, entered camp earlier this month on the heels of a memorable spring in which he threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns in the annual Garnet and Gold Game and also competed as a relief pitcher and outfielder for the 'Noles' baseball team. 'Noles Pummel Panthers, 41-13, in Jaboo's Debut

    September 3, 2013
He'd thrown fastballs in the 90s and runners out at third base from right field. He'd thrown a touchdown on his first toss of the 2013 spring game and he'd thrown a football up and over a fraternity house. He'd even joked with reporters and debuted a flawless MC Hammer impersonation.

But there was one thing Jameis Winston hadn't done in a whirlwind, hype-producing eight months: Florida State's redshirt freshman quarterback hadn't played a single snap of college football. (read more)

  • Karlos Williams

Williams' Position Switch Comes at Perfect Time

    September 6, 2013
As one of the nation's top high school players in 2011, Karlos Williams did two things in particular that the Youtube Generation loves: he lit people up on defense and he ran past people on offense.

High-school highlight tapes can form a life of their own online and Williams' myriad of eye-popping plays at Ridge Community High School made him one of the most popular prospects in his class. If he wasn't blasting some poor receiver coming across the middle, Williams was beating defenders in a foot race to the end zone. (read more)

FSU Scores 59 Unanswered in 62-7 Nevada Rout

    September 15, 2013
No. 10/9 Florida State's lopsided 62-7 victory over Nevada Saturday was more than just the team's second tally in the win column this season.

The Seminoles' (2-0) triumphant 2013 home opener also provided answers to some key offensive questions moving forward. (read more)

Winston Credits Teammates, Coaching for Success

    September 18, 2013
Two games into his collegiate career and it's pretty difficult to poke any holes in Jameis Winston's game. In blowout victories over Pittsburgh and Nevada, FSU's highly hyped quarterback has looked every bit the superstar he was expected to be and every bit the veteran he isn't.

After shredding the Panthers for 408 yards of total offense and five combined touchdowns, Winston followed that up by bouncing back from a first-quarter interception and carving up the Wolf Pack thanks to 13 consecutive completed passes and some "did you see that throw?" touchdown tosses. September 22, 2013

  • Jimbo Fisher

    Winston-Fisher Relationship Built on Trust

    September 25, 2013
Few relationships in sports are more critical than the one between a coach and his quarterback, and at Florida State that dynamic is taken to a whole new level.

As head coach, offensive coordinator and noted quarterback guru, Jimbo Fisher doesn't just want his signal callers to perform well game-by-game; he wants them to be perfect play-by-play. This quest for perfection -- and the pressure that comes with it -- means that FSU's quarterbacks not only have to be talented but they have to be thick-skinned and willing to work, too.

"That's what I would do if I were a coach," said Jameis Winston, FSU's starter, and if all goes to plan, the next in a long line of Fisher-produced NFL Draft picks at quarterback. "He's competitive. He wants everything to go perfect. He's a perfectionist, and that's one thing you want in a coach. You don't want a coach to allow you to do bad things and let little things go by." (read more)

Winston Leads FSU to 48-34 Win at BC

    September 28, 2013
No. 8 Florida State's defense bent but didn't break and Jameis Winston bent out of two potential sacks on the same play and broke Twitter Saturday night in the Seminoles' come-from-behind 48-34 win at Boston College.

FSU's defense struggled throughout most of the game to stop the run and slow down BC's different offensive looks as the 'Noles (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) fell behind 17-3 early.

But while the defense started generating stops, Winston and the offense began rolling -- and no play was more memorable and meaningful than the young quarterback's 55-yard touchdown throw to Kenny Shaw on the senior receiver's "snake route" as the first-half clock expired at Alumni Stadium. FSU Delivers Record-Tying 63-0 Maryland Knockout

    October 5, 2013
Playing with a chip on its shoulder, No. 8 Florida State's defense delivered whistle-to-whistle sustained blows to No. 25 Maryland in a 63-0 win at Doak Campbell Stadium -- an outcome that tied the college football record for most lopsided victory ever over a ranked team.

As the score would indicate, the previously untested Terrapins (4-1, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) couldn't do anything against an FSU (5-0, 3-0) defense that had to listen to a week's worth of negative fan and media chatter in the wake of its subpar performance at Boston College last weekend.

After allowing the Eagles to generate nearly 400 yards of offense in the come-from-behind win, the 'Noles held Maryland and its 18th-ranked offense to just 234 total yards -- including a paltry 33 on the ground.

    October 26, 2013
Bobby Bowden planted Osceola's spear and then major college football's all-time winningest coach watched his former team bury NC State, 49-17, Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium.

In a performance reminiscent of Florida State football's glory years when Bowden's teams were the baddest in the land, steamrolling lesser opponents and competing for national championships, Jimbo Fisher's No. 2 'Noles dropped 35 points on the Wolfpack (3-4, 0-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) in the first quarter before moving to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the ACC. Jameis Winston threw for 325 yards and No. 3 Florida State rolled to a 41-14 victory against No. 7 Miami in another matchup of undefeated Atlantic Coast Conference rivals that turned into a Seminoles' blowout.

Winston threw two interceptions in the first half after throwing four in the first seven games, but the Florida State defense shut out the Hurricanes (7-1, 3-1) in the second half after it was 21-14 at the break.

The Seminoles (8-0, 6-0) went on a 20-0 run after a skirmish broke out midway through the third quarter. (read more)

No. 2 'Noles: 2013 ACC Atlantic Division Champions

    November 9, 2013
How did No. 2 Florida State respond after being handed control of its own national-championship destiny Thursday night? It's defense delivered an ACC Atlantic Division title Saturday at Wake Forest.

FSU will have to win its next four games to punch a ticket to Pasadeana, but in a 59-3 walloping of Wake Forest at BB&T Field, the Seminoles (9-0, 7-0 ACC) used a dominating defense to at least guarantee itself a trip to Charlotte and the chance to defend its conference crown come Dec. 7.

The Seminoles were so good defensively against the Demon Deacons (4-6, 2-5) that Heisman Trophy hopeful Jameis Winston and his high-powered offense were merely an afterthought in the drubbing. (read more)
