Seminoles Ready for Yellow Jackets
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The No. 3 Florida State Seminoles (5-0, 3-0 ACC) practiced for the final time for 15 periods in shorts before Saturday's 3:30 p.m. ABC-televised ACC match up with No. 21 Georgia Tech (4-1, 3-0) at Doak Campbell Stadium.
The team started with kick off coverage and blocking drills before breaking off into offensive and defensive segments.
"The team went through a good work out today," said Coach Bobby Bowden. "We prepared for this game as good as can be prepared.
"We're in good physical shape. It's now a matter of getting prepared mentally."
On Georgia Tech:
"They're a solid football team with more depth than I've seen in the past," said Bowden. "They might be the best team we've faced this year."
Word came in from Orlando earlier in the afternoon on the 10 semifinalists for the 1997 Butkus Award. Florida State, the nation's No. 1-ranked defense, is represented not just by one player, but by two among the final 10.
Senior middle linebacker Daryl Bush, also a semifinalist in 1996, is joined by senior outside linebacker Sam Cowart on the elite list. Bush is fourth on the team in tackles with 30 despite missing one game with injury. Cowart, who sat out the entire 1996 season rehabilitating a left knee injury, leads the 'Noles in tackles with 48, including three for losses.
The final three will be chosen on November 13 in a teleconference from Orlando and the winner is selected at a gala dinner on December 13.
There were no new injuries to report from today's practice. Corey Simon (cervical strain/sprain) and Shawn McCorkel (hamstring) are doubtful. Donald Heaven (knee) is probable. Ron Dugans (thumb) is out. Carver Donaldson (strained finger) and Chris Walker (ankle) are questionable.
