FSU Prepares for ACC Foe, Maryland
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 5 Florida State Seminoles returned to full pads this afternoon as they continued preparation for their home opener against Maryland. The team practiced for 23 periods, focusing primarily on fundamentals with some 11-on-11 scrimmaging during the middle periods of practice.
"It was a pretty good practice," said head coach Bobby Bowden. "We worked on correcting some of our missed assignments. The little mistakes cause a bad play."
Senior middle linebacker Daryl Bush sat out with a sprained right ankle. Bush injured the ankle in the second quarter of the USC game.
"Daryl was held out and rode the bike today," said Bowden. "He is day-to-day. If something happens where we need to make a lineup change due to his injury, we will go with Bobby Rhodes and Brian Allen. Demetro Stephens is the second-team middle linebacker, but he is not quite ready to return. The doctors haven't cut him loose yet."
The Seminole tailbacks highlighted the 11-on-11 scrimmaging. Vannez Gooch broke a 35-yard touchdown run while Travis Minor had gains of 15 and 20 yards. Davy Ford and Minor added scores in goalline. Freshman Derrick Gibson recorded a pair of hits during the live action, one on tight end Myron Jackson after a reception and one on quarterback Dan Kendra during goalline.
The team will return to practice tomorrow afternoon. Saturday's kickoff against Maryland is scheduled for 3:30 pm, televised regionally by ABC.
Injury report: DT Char-ron Dorsey - mild right knee MCL sprain, DT Corey Simon - injured left ankle, and Randy Wilkins - right ankle sprain. Ross Brannon (cervical nerves) was held out of practice along with Bush and is scheduled to return tomorrow without contact.
