Busby Impressive in Preseason Scrimmage

TALLAHASSEE, FL -- The No. 3 Florida State Seminoles participated in their first scrimmage of the preseason as quarterback Thad Busby shined.

"I don't know if Thad Busby has thrown the ball better than he did today," said Bobby Bowden. "He was very accurate and kept his cool on the field. He did an outstanding job out there."

Busby completed 13 of 17 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns in normal scrimmage situations. He hit receiver Germaine Stringer for a 43-yard score in the opening series of the scrimmage. Stringer caught three passes for 85 yards on the day.

"The most suprising thing was the way the No. 1 offense took the ball and moved down the field on the first drive," commented Bowden. "The No. 1 defense didn't give up a score. Both of the first units looked good."

Receiver Marvin Minnis also caught a 36-yard pass from Busby for a touchdown, finishing the day with two receptions for 63 yards. Busby closed out the one-minute drill with a 13-yard TD to E.G. Green in the corner of the endzone.

Sophomore quarterback Dan Kendra completed 12 of 15 passes for 119 yards, one touchdown and threw two interceptions. Kendra hit E.G. Green for a 12-yard score, but gave up picks to cornerback Shevin Smith and safety Sean Key. Green finished the day with six receptions for 86 yards and two TDs.

In the backfield, freshman Davey Ford led the Seminoles with 45 yards on three carries. Ford also caught three passes for 16 yards. Freshman Travis Minor ran for 15 yards on five carries, while junior Dee Feaster rushed six times for 12 yards. Sophomore Vannez Gooch added 26 yards on six carries.

"I wasn't disappointed with what I saw from the running game," commented Bowden. "Davy Ford did some good things. We didn't scrimmage Feaster as much, so we could see what the other guys could do."

Defensively, freshman David Warren totalled five tackles, including three for loss, plus 2.5 sacks. Warren also broke up a pass.

"The freshmen got a chance to get some experience," said Bowden. "We need to build some depth with those guys. David Warren looked good. It was good thing the quarterbacks were wearing the green jerseys because he would have some of them on the stretcher. He came tearing through there a couple of times."

Defensive end Greg Spires had six tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks, freshman Abdual Howard made a team-leading seven tackles, and linebacker Lamont Green added five tackles and one sack. Defensive end Andre Wadsworth had five tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack. Linebacker Theon Rackley had an interception of a Chris Weinke pass and senior linebacker Daryl Bush made two tackles and one sack.

"Daryl Bush is key in there, leading and making some plays especially on third down," Bowden said. "He made some big third down stops."
