Harrisburg, Pa.- Uplifting Athletes chapter leaders from the Florida State University football program are looking for more than a victory over Auburn in the upcoming VIZIO BCS National Championship Game at the Rose Bowl Stadium.
The Seminoles will raise funds and awareness for the rare disease Fanconi anemia by holding a Touchdown Pledge Drive for the game in Pasadena on January 6, 2014. Fans can pledge to donate any amount per touchdown prior to kickoff by visiting www.upliftingathletes.org/fsu
Uplifting Athletes is a national nonprofit organization aligning college football with rare diseases. Each of the campus chapters nationwide is run by football student-athletes and works to elevate its chosen rare disease as a national priority through outreach, research, education and advocacy.
The Florida State Chapter of Uplifting Athletes has partnered with the Kidz 1stst Fund and adopted Fanconi anemia as its rare disease in honor of Jimbo and Candi Fisher's youngest son Ethan.
"I knew coach Fisher's story with Ethan and I knew it was a situation where our head coach's son was directly affected by this rare disease," said Seminoles injured tight end Kevin Haplea, who founded the Uplifting Athletes Chapter at FSU in September 2013."As players we are on such a big stage at Florida State. So doing this goes a long way to helping others."
The Florida State Chapter of Uplifting Athletes has been able to leverage the success of the football team in 2013 to raise funds in support of research for this rare disease.
Earlier this year the Seminoles' Uplifting Athletes Chapter did a similar Touchdown Pledge Drive for the Syracuse game and raised more than $8,000 toward the fight against Fanconi anemia.
"To take the platform these players have as athletes, using the position they are in, and doing something to help others says a lot about the character of these young me," coach Fisher said. "Candi and I are so appreciative."
