TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State senior punter Shawn Powell has been named to the 2011 AFCA FBS Coaches' All-America Team announced by the American Football Coaches Association Monday.

Powell, a first team All-ACC selection from Rome, Ga., led the nation in overall punting (47.0) and net punting (42.0) becoming the first Atlantic Coast Conference punter since 2005 Ray Guy Award Winner Ryan Plackemeier to lead the nation in both. "This is a great honor," Powell said.

"It feels very good to be recognized. I worked very hard the last four years. I got off to a bit of a slow start this year but I think things improved every week throughout the season. It just goes to show you that hard work does pay off. It is a great feeling to know I will always be known as an All-American. I really couldn't ask for any better honor."

Powell recorded 21 punts in excess of 50 yards and his 69-yarder against Oklahoma was also the longest on the season among ACC punters. He has seven punts of 60 yards on the season giving him 11 in his career. Of his 49 punts on the season, 21 (43 percent) have been downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line, including 12 inside the 10 and 63 percent of his punts are not returned. Against three of the nation's top punt returners - TJ Graham (NC State), Ryan Broyles (Oklahoma) and Tony Logan (Maryland), he limited them to a combined five returns for 21 yards.

Powell now holds the FSU school record for career punting average (44.01).

A three-time ACC Specialist of the Week honoree - the most by any player in that category - Powell is the first Seminole in 20 years of ACC membership to be selected as a first team punter. He led the ACC in net punting and overall punting for the second straight year.
