No. 1/1 FLORIDA STATE vs No. 19/21 Miami
Saturday, October 9 - 12:00 PM - ABC
Doak Campbell Stadium (80,000) - Tallahassee, FL

SETTING THE SCENE: No. 1 Florida State (5-0) returns to Tallahassee for a non-conference matchup with in-state rival Miami (2-2). Doak Campbell Stadium is now home to the nation's longest home winning streak at 26 games. The Seminoles also own the longest home unbeaten streak in the country at 43 games, dating back to a 17-16 loss to Miami in 1991. FSU has won four straight and six of the last 10 against the Hurricanes.

  • The Seminoles won 26-14 last year in the Orange Bowl as Chris Weinke threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns with Peter Warrick catching seven passes for 190 yards and one TD. Weinke's touchdown passes were the first by an FSU quarterback in the Orange Bowl since Brad Johnson threw one in 1990. The Seminole defense totaled seven sacks and held Miami to just 69 rushing yards. Defensive end Roland Seymour added a safety of Hurricane QB Kenny Kelly to complete the scoring late in the fourth quarter.
  • Heisman Trophy candidate Peter Warrick accounted for four touchdowns in FSU's 51-23 win over Duke last Saturday in Jacksonville. Warrick caught three TD passes in the first quarter and threw a 35-yard scoring strike to Laveranues Coles in the second quarter. Ron Dugans led all receivers with a career-high 141 yards on five catches, including an 84-yard touchdown. Chris Weinke established a new career-best with five TD passes, finishing 19-of-27 for 290 yards on the afternoon. The FSU defense continued its trend of forcing turnovers as Tay Cody, Chris Hope and Brian Allen each recorded interceptions against the Blue Devils. With 12 interceptions through five games, the defense is on pace to break the all-time record for interceptions in a season (25).
  • Warrick is averaging 101.6 yards per game receiving and leads the ACC in punt returns with an average of 16.2 per return. The senior All-American has scored in four different categories with four TD receptions, two TD runs, one TD pass and a punt return for a TD.

    GLADDEN'S 25-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Jim Gladden is celebrating his silver anniversary as a member of the FSU coaching staff in 1999. Gladden's tenure is even longer than Bobby Bowden and is the second-longest in school history. Gladden has coached the defensive ends since 1996 and guided several current NFL standouts at that position, including Peter Boulware (Ravens), Reinard Wilson (Bengals) and Andre Wadsworth (Cardinals).

    COACHING CONTINUITY
Along with Jim Gladden, several FSU coaches have been with the program for a number of years. Bowden's nine assistants average more than 18 years of collegiate experience (166 years total). Only one coach has departed since the 1993 national championship season. Billy Sexton (24th season), Chuck Amato (18th season) and Mickey Andrews (16th season) are next in line behind Gladden in tenure. FSU's coaching staff tenure is second only to Penn State's nationally.

    WARRICK'S STREAK REACHES 36
With at least one reception in the Seminoles' first five contests, Peter Warrick has caught a pass in 36 consecutive games (including bowls). E.G. Green (now with the Indianapolis Colts) is the FSU record holder with 38 consecutive games with a catch from 1994-97. Warrick and Green were FSU's starting receivers in 1997. If Warrick continues the streak, he will tie the record against Wake Forest and break it against Clemson.

AIRING IT OUT IN THE ORANGE BOWL
In last year's 26-14 win over Miami, Chris Weinke's 316 passing yards were the most passing yards for an FSU quarterback in the Orange Bowl against Miami during the Bowden era. Weinke's two TD passes were the first that an FSU QB has thrown since Brad Johnson had one in 1990. The contest was Weinke's first 300-yard passing game.

    MARK IT AT THE 20
Of Sebastian Janikowski's 43 kickoffs this season, 33 have resulted in touchbacks (77%). Four kickoffs have gone throught the uprights and two others have bounced off the uprights this year.

    BOWDEN NEARS 300 VICTORIES
Bobby Bowden could become the fifth Division I-A coach to record 300 wins with FSU's eighth victory this season. Bowden's 297 wins rank second among active coaches behind only Penn State's Joe Paterno.

    ALL-TIME DIV. I-A COACHING VICTORIES

    1. Paul "Bear" Bryant 323
    2. Glenn "Pop" Warner 319
    3. Amos Alonzo Stagg 314
    4. Joe Paterno 312
    5. Bobby Bowden 297

    FSU & BOBBY BOWDEN'S SUCCESS
  • Florida State is the only team in the history of college football to finish among the Associated Press Top Four for 12 consecutive seasons.

  • FSU also has the NCAA record for most consecutive bowl victories as the Seminoles won 11 straight from 1986 to 1996.

  • The Seminoles are the only team in the history of the game to post a 14-game bowl unbeaten streak.

  • Florida State has won seven straight ACC championships and has lost just twice in 56 games against conference opponents.

  • FSU players have won the Heisman, Thorpe (twice), Butkus (twice), Unitas (twice), O'Brien, Maxwell, Lombardi and Groza Awards, all in the last 12 years.

  • Bowden is the only coach in college football history to post 12-straight, 10-win seasons.

  • Over the last 12 years, Florida State has won the Orange (3), Fiesta (2), Sugar (3), Blockbuster (1) and Cotton (1) Bowls.

  • Bowden owns the nation's best all-time bowl winning percentage at .750 with a 16-5-1 mark. His 16 victories rank second all-time (19, Paterno). At FSU, Bowden is 15-4-1 in bowls.

    ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Miami started off the year with wins over Ohio State and Florida A&M, but dropped its last two contests to Penn State and East Carolina. The Hurricanes led in both of their losses in the fourth quarter before losing by identical scores of 27-23. RB James Jackson (89.8 yds. per game) and WR Santana Moss (73.0 yds. per game) pace the Hurricanes offensively. Linebackers Nate Webster (47 tackles) and Dan Morgan (40 tackles) lead a UM defense that is giving up 190.8 passing yards per game and 82.8 yards a game on the ground.

    NATION'S LONGEST HOME WINNING STREAK
Florida State already owned the nation's longest home unbeaten streak at 43 games and with Florida's 40-39 overtime loss to Alabama last Saturday in Gainesville, FSU now owns the country's longest home win streak at 26. The Seminoles have won 26 in a row in Doak Campbell Stadium. This week's opponent, Miami, is the last visitor to walk out of Tallahassee with a win. The Hurricanes, ranked No. 2 at the time, defeated top-ranked FSU 17-16 on Nov. 16, 1991. Seminole placekicker Gerry Thomas' 34-yard field goal with less than 30 seconds to play sailed wide right, allowing the 'Canes to win that game. Ironically, Florida placekicker Jeff Chandler's extra point attempt in overtime against Alabama missed wide right, giving FSU the nation's longest home winning streak.

PRESEASON NO. 1 FOR FIFTH TIME
Florida State opened the year at the top of the polls for the fifth time in school history. FSU was voted the AP preseason No. 1 in 1988, 1991, 1993 and 1995. In 1993, FSU became just the eighth team to be ranked No. 1 in the preseason and end up as national champion. Oklahoma (1956, '74, '75, '85), Tennessee (1951), Michigan State (1952) and Alabama (1978) were the others.

    94% OF OFFENSE IS BACK
Peter Warrick's decision to return for his senior season means FSU lost just 274 yards of total offense from its 1998 totals. The Seminoles return their top five receivers and top four rushers along with every player who attempted a pass. Of FSU's 385 points scored last year, 373 were scored by players who are back for the 1999 campaign. Former FB Lamarr Glenn and RB Raymont Skaggs, who transferred after the La. Tech game, had one touchdown each last season.

    AYE, AYE CAPTAIN
Coach Bowden's 1999 captains are WR Ron Dugans and OG Jason Whitaker (offense), DT Jerry Johnson and NG Corey Simon (defense) and LB Bobby Rhodes (special teams). Permanent captains are voted on by the team at the end of the season.

    'NOLES IN PRESEASON MAGAZINES
In the preseason college football magazines, Florida State was picked No. 1 by Lindy's, Street & Smith's, Athlon's and Football News (FSU was No. 2 in the Sporting News and SI with Penn St. No. 1). Peter Warrick, Corey Simon and Sebastian Janikowski were preseason All-America selections across the board. LB Brian Allen, CB Tay Cody, CB Mario Edwards, S Derrick Gibson, DT Jerry Johnson, RB Travis Minor, LB Tommy Polley, DE Jamal Reynolds, DE Roland Seymour, QB Chris Weinke and OG Jason Whitaker were listed on All-ACC preseason teams in at least one of the publications. Below are players rated nationally by position:

Brian Allen Lindy's No. 18 ILB
Ross Brannon Sporting News' No. 7 OT
Tay Cody Lindy's No. 15 CB
Ron Dugans Lindy's No. 27 WR
Mario Edwards Sporting News' No. 1 CB
                     Lindy's No. 17 CB
    S. Janikowski Lindy's No. 1 K
                     Sporting News' No. 1 K
Jerry Johnson Lindy's No. 5 DT
                     Sporting News' No. 7 DT

Jamal Reynolds Lindy's No. 17 DE
Roland Seymour Lindy's No. 5 DE
                     Sporting News' No. 3 DE
Corey Simon Sporting News' No. 1 DT
                     Lindy's No. 1 DT
Tarlos Thomas Lindy's No. 11 OT
Peter Warrick Lindy's No. 1 WR
                     Sporting News' No. 1 WR
Chris Weinke Sporting News' No. 6 QB

    * Also of note in the unit rankings, FSU's wide receivers were rated no lower than third in the country (Street & Smith's No. 1) and the defensive line was picked as the nation's best by Lindy's and Street & Smith's. The only other unit to receive top billing was the offensive line (Sporting News). The offensive backfield's lowest rating was fourth while the secondary's lowest rating was sixth in the preseason magazines.

    WEINKE SETS ACC MARK
Chris Weinke established a new ACC record for consecutive passes without an interception in the Louisiana Tech game. Weinke's touchdown pass to freshman Anquan Boldin tied Matt Blundin's (Virginia) record of 231. The record was broken when Weinke hit Peter Warrick for five yards with 13:15 remaining in the first half. The streak ended at 237 when Weinke was intercepted just before the half. The streak of eight plus games without a pick ranks as one of the most impressive runs in school history. Since throwing six interceptions at NC State last year, Weinke had completed 126 passes in 237 attempts for 2,140 yards and 18 touchdowns without an interception. Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward put together a similar stretch (110-of-160 for 1,278 yards and 11 TD) during the 1993 season. After an INT in the first series at UNC that year, Ward rolled through the next four games before being picked off at Notre Dame.

    WARRICK JOINS 3,000 YARD CLUB
Peter Warrick became just the second Seminole to eclipse 3,000 receiving yards against North Carolina. Warrick's 3,091 career yards are second only to Ron Sellers (3,598). Warrick took second place in career TD catches vs. Duke (28) and only needs one to tie E.G. Green for the school record. Warrick is now third in career receptions with 172 and needs 17 to tie Kez McCorvey for second all-time. He currently stands in second place on the school's career list for 100-yard games with 12. He broke a tie with E.G. Green (1994-97) with his third 100-yard game of the season against UNC. Ron Sellers (1966-68) is FSU's all-time leader in the category with 18.

    WEINKE PASSING INTO RECORD BOOKS
With 1,295 yards and 11 touchdowns through five games, quarterback Chris Weinke ranks in FSU's all-time Top Ten in passing yardage (3,854) and touchdown passes (32). With three more TD passes, Weinke would move into eighth place. The junior is 281 yards away from taking eighth on the school's career passing yardage list.

    STRONGEST FSU SQUAD EVER
The 1999 team's hard work in the weight room is documented by the results of summer testing. A record nine Seminoles bench pressed 500 pounds or more with DT Antoine Mirambeau leading the way at 535. OG Justin Amman, OL Donald Heaven, OG Montrae Holland, DT Jerry Johnson, LB Brian Allen, DE Jamal Reynolds, LB Bobby Rhodes and OT Todd Williams were the other eight to reach the 500-lb. plateau. Forty-four 'Noles benched at least 400 pounds.

    RICHT FAMILY ADDS TWO
Offensive coordinator Mark Richt and his wife Kathryn had a busy summer as they adopted two orphaned children from the Ukraine. Zach (3) and Anya (2) join Jonathan (9) and David (4) as the two newest members of the Richt family. Richt and the offensive coaches moved their pregame plans up a month so he could join his wife in the Ukraine and complete the adoption process.

    DEFENSE CONSISTENTLY AT THE TOP
The Seminoles have ranked among the nation's top 10 in total defense in six of the last eight years, including a No. 1 national ranking last year. FSU has been in the nation's top 10 in rushing defense in seven of the last eight years (No. 1 in 1996, 1997 and No. 2 in 1998). In pass efficiency, the Tribe ranked first nationally last season and has been among the 10 best in five of the last six years. FSU has also ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense in four of the last six seasons.

Florida State's defense and special teams have accounted for five touchdowns in 1999. Sean Key returned an interception 25 yards against UNC for a score for the Seminole defense's fourth touchdown of the season. Peter Warrick followed up with a 75-yard punt return for the special teams' first score of 1999. FSU's five TD's by the defense and special teams leads the country. In 1998, the Florida State defense did not score a touchdown and it had five in 1997.

    POLISH POWER
Florida State junior placekicker Sebastian Janikowski, the 1998 Lou Groza Award winner, had hit nine straight field goals before missing from 49 and 52 yards at UNC. He converted on all three of his field goal attempts against Duke and tied an FSU mark with five field goals in the win over NC State. He also saved two points by making a tackle on a botched extra point in the NC State game. He has made 24 of his last 28 attempts. Here is a breakdown of his attempts during the streak:

    Distance Results
    20-29 yards 6-of-6
    30-39 yards 7-of-7

    ACC LEADS NATIONAL TV RATINGS
Over the last two years, the Atlantic Coast Conference has reached a new level of popularity among college football television viewers across the country. In 1997, the ACC had the highest rated game on ESPN (FSU vs. UNC), CBS (FSU vs. Florida) and NBC (Ga. Tech vs. Notre Dame). In 1998, the ACC had the two highest rated games on ABC (FSU vs. Florida and FSU vs. Texas A&M), the highest rated ESPN Thursday night telecast (Virginia vs. Auburn) and the highest rated ESPN Saturday prime time telecast (Ga. Tech vs. FSU).

    FLORIDA STATE AND THE NFL
Over the last five years, FSU has had nine players selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. During that time, 34 Seminoles have been drafted. With just four players drafted last year, the 1999 squad is loaded with players who will likely fill NFL rosters for years to come. NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper, Jr., rated seven FSU seniors among the top 15 at their respective positions with Peter Warrick leading the way as the No. 1 ranked wide receiver. Eight juniors were rated among the top 10 at their positions for the 2001 NFL Draft. Chris Weinke and Sebastian Janikowski were the top rated QB and K in the country among the underclassmen.

FSU IN THE WEEKLY AP POLL
Since the middle of the 1989 season, Florida State has been ranked in the Associated Press Top 10 in 160 of the 165 weekly polls. Of the last 146 polls (11/12/90), the Seminoles have been out of the AP Top 10 just twice. Additionally, FSU has been at No. 1 for a total of 48 weeks.

POLLEY NAMED TO BUTKUS WATCH LIST
Junior weakside linebacker Tommy Polley was one of 65 players on the preliminary Butkus Award list. Polley was fifth on the team with 59 total tackles in 1998, had five tackles for loss and an interception. In the Butkus Award's 14-year history, FSU has had two winners (Paul McGowan - 1987 and Marvin Jones - 1992).

    CODY, EDWARDS & THORPE
Cornerbacks Tay Cody and Mario Edwards are two of the 37 defensive backs on the Jim Thorpe Award "watch list." Florida State is one of just three schools to have two players mentioned (Nebraska and Tennessee). Two Seminoles have won the Thorpe Award - Deion Sanders (1988) and Terrell Buckley (1991).

    MINOR, SIMON AND WHITAKER MENTIONED
There are several other Seminoles on the preliminary national award lists. RB Travis Minor (Doak Walker), NG Corey Simon (Bronko Nagurski & Outland) and OG Jason Whitaker (Outland) have been recognized on the preseason award releases. Coach Bowden is the keynote speaker at the Bronko Nagurski Award in December.

SEMINOLES 33-4 AT AP NUMBER ONE
Florida State holds a 33-4 record when ranked the No. 1 team in the Associated Press Poll. The first loss, which came in FSU's first game as the nation's top team, was a 31-0 season-opening defeat at Miami in 1988. The Seminoles also lost to Miami (1991), Notre Dame (1993) and Florida (1996) while in the top spot.

    RICHT A FORMER HURRICANE
Florida State offensive coordinator Mark Richt played quarterback at Miami behind Jim Kelly. In 1982, Richt started against the Tribe, completing 18-of-37 for 237 yards in a 24-7 loss to the 'Noles. In addition to Kelly, two other future NFL QBs were on the UM roster along with Richt - Bernie Kosar and Vinny Testaverde.

    WINNING ON THE GROUND
In the past 11 meetings between FSU and Miami, the team that has totaled the most rushing yards has emerged victorious. The last time the losing team rushed for more yards than the winner was 1987. FSU outgained Miami, 225 to 52 on the ground that year, but lost 26-25 after an incomplete two-point conversion pass. Last year the Seminoles rushed for 95 yards and held Miami to 69 yards rushing en route to a 26-14 victory in the Orange Bowl.

    WARRICK MOVING INTO NCAA ELITE
Peter Warrick will rank in the top 10 in two NCAA receiving categories if he can at least duplicate his 1998 stats. If Warrick had exactly the same numbers this season, he would finish seventh on the NCAA all-time career receiving yardage list (3,815) and tied for seventh on the NCAA all-time career receiving touchdowns (35). Additionally, his 197 receptions would place him into a tie for 27th. Sebastian Janikowski would tie for 17th in kicker career scoring (331) if he matched his point total of 123 from 1998. That figure would put him just ahead of former Seminole kicker Scott Bentley's total of 326.

REGULAR SEASON WIN STREAK AT 15
Florida State has won 15 consecutive regular season games entering the Miami contest. The Seminoles' last regular season loss was at North Carolina State on Sept. 12 last year. The 15-game regular season run is tied for the third longest mark in school history. FSU won 21 in a row during the regular season from the start of the 1996 campaign to the final game of the 1997 season. Florida State had an 18-game winning streak from Oct. 28, 1978 through Sept. 27, 1980. That streak was stopped at Miami. The Seminoles have won 15 straight regular games two other times during the '90s - from Oct. 27, 1990 to Nov. 16, 1991 (stopped by Miami) and Oct. 10, 1992 to Nov. 13, 1993 (stopped by Notre Dame).

FIRST LOSS HAS BEEN TO UM EIGHT TIMES
Miami has traditionally been a tough hurdle in FSU's schedule and run for a possible national title. The Hurricanes have handed the Seminoles their first loss of the season eight times (1977, '80, '87, '88, 90, '91, '92, '94) during the Bowden era.

PLENTY OF TALENT IN THE FSU-UM SERIES
The 1987 rosters show the caliber of players that Florida State and Miami have put on the field over the years. A total of 52 players that were listed on the rosters in UM's 26-25 win in Tallahassee went on to play in the NFL (29 Hurricanes and 23 Seminoles).

    PETER WARRICK HEISMAN COMPARISONS
Peter Warrick could become just the fourth wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy. Nebraska's Johnny Rodgers (1972), Notre Dame's Tim Brown (1987) and Michigan's Desmond Howard (1991) are the only wide receivers to win the award. At his current pace, Warrick would have more receptions and yards than any of the other three past winners. Warrick leads ESPN.COM's Heisman rankings again this week, ahead of Joe Hamilton of Georgia Tech and Shaun Alexander of Alabama. Listed below are his projected season numbers compared to the season stats of the wide receivers who won the Heisman:

    Player Receiving Rushing Returns
    Rodgers 55-942 (8 TD) 58-308 (7 TD) 47-802 (2 TD)
    Brown 39-846 (3 TD) 34-144 (1 TD) 57-857 (2 TD)
    Howard 62-985 (19 TD) 13-180 (2 TD) 33-694 (2 TD)
    Warrick 79-1118 (9 TD) 15-187 (4 TD) 24-392 (2 TD)

    PILING UP THE POINTS
Under Bobby Bowden, the Seminoles are 103-1 in games in which they score 40 or more points. The Seminoles have scored over 40 points in each of the first five games this season. FSU scored 40+ points eight times in the 1993 and 1995 seasons. In the 103 games (dating back to 1976), FSU has:
  • scored 50-59 points 31 times
  • scored 60-69 points seven times
  • scored 70+ points seven times

The lone loss when scoring 40 or more came against Auburn at home in 1984, 41-42.

    DUKE POST-GAME INJURY REPORT

  • QB Jared Jones - left elbow sprain
  • DT Jerry Johnson - mild right knee sprain
  • LB Bobby Rhodes - right calf contusion
  • NG Corey Simon - right hip flexor
  • S Chris Hope - left forefoot sprain
  • S Abdual Howard - right shoulder separation

    * DE Roland Seymour (shoulder) and DE Chris Walker (knee) are expected to return vs. Miami while OL Donald Heaven (ankle) remains questionable.

    DEFENSE OUTSCORES NC STATE
The Seminole defense scored its second touchdown of the season when David Warren stripped Jamie Barnette in the endzone and Jamal Reynolds recovered for the score, and their third when Abdual Howard returned an interception 47 yards for a TD against NC State. The last time FSU scored two defensive touchdowns was 1991 against Michigan. In the season opener vs. La. Tech, Theon Rackley returned an interception 10 yards for a TD. Last season, the FSU defense did not record a touchdown. The last time FSU scored off a fumble was Sam Cowart's return at Florida in 1997.

    AGAINST THE TOP 25
The Seminoles have been tough on Associated Press Top 25 teams since joing the ACC in 1992. Over that span, FSU is 34-8-1 against ranked foes. Against ACC teams that are ranked, Florida State has posted a 19-1 mark with the only loss coming at No. 24 Virginia, 33-28, in 1995. The Seminoles have won 15 of their last 16 regular season games against ranked teams.

    BRANNON OUT
Junior offensive tackle Ross Brannon, a first-team All-ACC selection a year ago, had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday (9/30). Team doctors removed some loose bodies and have decided to hold him out of competition indefinitely as they continue evaluation. Donald Heaven or Brett Williams will start in his place (split tackle). Heaven started the NC State and UNC games while Williams started last week against Duke.

    '90s VERSUS MIAMI
Florida State's series with Miami in the 1990's has undergone a complete role reversal over the last four seasons. From 1990-94, FSU was 1-4 against the Hurricanes, with an average scoring margin in the games of (-1.8). The Seminoles lost by one, three, nine and 14 points during that stretch and won by 18. Since 1995, Florida State is 4-0 against Miami and has won by an average margin of 25.3 points. FSU owns wins by 12, 18, 24 and 47 in that span.

    BOWDEN TALK

"(On Jared Jones sprained left elbow) As far as Jared Jones is concerned, we plan to play him. If he starts to miss some games, we might apply for a medical hardship."

"(On Duke) When we sub one at a time, we seem to be okay. But when we substitute whole groups, 11 for 11, we struggle. Our second unit isn't as good as other teams first. I think yesterday, Duke had a lot to do with that. They kept on fighting in the second half and mixed up their defenses well.

"Since the Georgia Tech game, our defense has been very good. Anytime a team gets the ball in your territory, it is hard for them not to score. We stopped them (Duke) a couple of times after turnovers but they have a very good field goal kicker who converted. Our offense, really our second offense, certainly didn't help our defense yesterday. I don't think it is anything to get alarmed about. I was pleased with the goalline stand. I can't think of the last time we had a goalline stand where the opponent didn't get any points."

"I thought Chris Weinke looked better than he has. He threw the ball very well. I hope he continues to come on like he did last year. We seem so much farther along this year than we did last year at this time on offense."

"To me, Miami is a 4-0 ball club. They are so close to being undefeated instead of 2-2. They're on the way back to being where they used to be - in the Top 10."

"Peter Warrick is having such a great year. He plays a year older than he did last year. He has made continuous improvement each year since he got here. He has improved in the way he handles himself on the field and off the field as a leader."

"The week off has given them (Miami) plenty of time to get ready for us. I don't know how they will respond to the East Carolina loss. You will see how much resolve they have this week. I know they will come back, I just hope it isn't this week. Kenny Kelly has a lot of ability, but sometimes his inexperience shows up. I think Miami - along with Georgia Tech - will be the best team we have faced so far this season. Miami is probably a little better on defense than Georgia Tech, but Georgia Tech is better on offense. This team can beat us. We need to be prepared. It's not fun to play a wounded team. I wouldn't want to play Florida this week after they lost and Miami is wounded too."

"Miami has beaten us when everything was riding on it - they won the national championship when we could have won it. We can't be overconfident because they have lost twice. Our coaches are sure aware that they can beat us. The cycle (in the series) is kind of going our way but it can change. We know we are going to be in a battle. Our guys will see the film - they should have beaten Penn State and East Carolina."

"I think in a good rivalry, the best team doesn't always win. The 1989 game (versus Miami) is a good indicator of that. We had lost twice entering the game and they were undefeated. We beat them 24-10 but they went on to win the national championship even though we beat them. If we didn't lose our first game to Southern Miss we probably would have won the national championship."

"I feel like we (the ACC) could control the whole eastern seaboard if we got Boston College, Syracuse and Miami. That is just me talking though. I don't know if they (Miami) have been approached."
