Our 13 for '13 series continues this Monday with one of the players looking to become the next starting quarterback of the Seminoles, Jameis Winston.
Winston introduced himself to Florida State fans in a big way during the spring game when his first play from scrimmage was a 58 yard touchdown pass. Winston went on to complete 12 of 15 passes for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns as fans salivated about the prospects for the fall.
While head coach Jimbo Fisher has not named a starter for the season, it is safe to say that Winston has given himself an opportunity to earn the job after a stellar spring. The redshirt freshman will continue to battle with redshirt sophomore Jacob Coker and redshirt freshman Sean Maguire for the job when fall camp opens on August 6.
Winston's blend of athleticism and big play ability make him an intriguing prospect for the Noles who haven't opened a season with a freshman at quarterback since Drew Weatherford in 2005. The charismatic two-sport star is also a big hit in the locker room with his teammates, both on the football field and the baseball diamond.
With a veteran offensive line and and bevy of upperclassmen at the skill positions expect whoever comes out on top in the quarterback battle to have plenty of help on September 2nd in Pittsburgh. If that happens to be Winston, Seminoles fans will be hoping for similar results as they saw from the Spring Game.
