As we continue our look at the top 12 players to watch for 2012, today we'll talk defense.
It's no secret that this unit should be one of the best in the nation yet again under defensive coordinator Mark Stoops.
And a main part of that foundation is defensive end Bjoern Werner. The junior from Germany has already made quite the name for himself in just two seasons as a Seminole, but year three should see Werner take his place as one of the best defensive ends in the country.
Last season, Werner had seven sacks with 11 tackles for loss and was a force to be reckoned with off the edge.
But that may not be his most impressive attribute. While he's certainly a powerful end at about 275 pounds, Werner has developed that instinctive ability to read the quarterback and drop back into coverage.
Watch this play. Werner receives his normal double team by the offensive line, yet even though he's beat the right guard, he reads the QB's eyes and makes an unbelievable play right in the passing lane.
That's the mark of a complete football player. Werner's role will be even bigger this season, as both he and Brandon Jenkins will make up arguably the best defensive end duo in the country.
It will once again be Werner's job to wreak havoc in the backfield, and not only use that power and speed to get off the edge around the offensive line, but use those instincts to confuse the living daylights out of opposing quarterbacks.
If those ends continue to bring pressure, the sky is the limit for this Seminole defense.
Come back on Thursday as we continue our look at the top players to watch for 2012.
