Mellor: Instant Analysis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State head football coach Jimbo Fisher has made some personnel changes effective for spring practice, which begins March 19 and concludes with the annual Garnet & Gold Spring Game on April 14 at 4 p.m. in Doak Campbell Stadium.

Rising junior defensive end Dan Hicks switches sides to offense and will line up at tight end, while fellow defensive lineman Cameron Erving joins Hicks on offense, moving to offensive tackle. Safety Nick Moody, who’s always been effective against the run from his secondary spot, makes the move permanently into the box at outside linebacker. Moody’s offseason conditioning has bulked him up to 242 pounds for his new spot on the nation’s No. 4 returning defense. Defensive end Toshmon Stevens will continue on the line, but may be featured as a linebacker at times as well.

Hicks played in 26 games in two seasons on defense and registered 34 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. As a redshirt freshman in 2011, Erving exploded onto the scene, adding depth to one of FSU’s strongest positions at defensive tackle. He produced 20 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Hampered by a leg injury last season, Moody saw action in nine games and totaled 23 tackles. In 35 career games, Moody’s posted 135 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. Stevens earned one of four Special Teams Most Valuable Player of the Year awards at the 2011 team banquet. In 37 career games, he’s totaled 16 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

No other position changes are expected.

New Look for a few ‘Noles

A few Seminoles will be sporting new numbers in 2012, adding to the run of duplicate numbers on the roster. Defensive end Brandon Jenkins drops the numeral nine and will wear No. 4, while on offense that number (4) will now be worn by running back Chris Thompson, who has worn No. 23 the past three seasons. Along with their position changes, tight end Dan Hicks will now don No. 6, while Cameron Erving will sport No. 75 as an offensive tackle.

Other notable new jersey numbers for the spring are DB Tyler Hunter (1), RB Mario Pender (7), P Cason Beatty (38) and OL Daniel Glauser (67).

Secord to Graduate

Quarterback Will Secord, who was a redshirt sophomore last season, will graduate this summer and has decided not to return for the 2012 season. Secord is on track to receive his degree in interdisciplinary social science. He played in two career games – against Samford in 2010 and Charleston Southern in 2011. Linebacker Holmes Onwukaife was also added to the medically disqualified list late in 2011 and will not play in 2012.
