2009 ACC Schedule -- Week-by-Week
2009 ACC Schedule -- By Team
2009 ACC Schedule -- Grid
Greensboro, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference released the football schedules for all 12 conference members today. Florida State’s schedule features 11 teams that played in a bowl game in 2008 and the squad will open the 2009 campaign on Labor Day versus ACC rival Miami, which is the first of six games scheduled to be played in Doak Campbell Stadium in 2009. After three home games in the month of September, FSU will play five of its final eight games on the road including three of four in the month of November.
Of the Seminoles’ 12 scheduled opponents for 2008, 11 played in bowl games last year. Non-conference foes Florida (BCS National Championship), South Florida (St. Petersburg Bowl), BYU (Las Vegas), and ACC opponents Miami (Emerald), Boston College (Music City), Georgia Tech (Chick-fil-A), North Carolina (Meineke Car Care), NC State (Papjohn’s.com), Clemson (Gator), Wake Forest (EagleBank) and Maryland (Roady’s Humanitarian) all participated in post-season play. This comes on the heels of FSU playing the nation’s eighth-tougest schedule in 2008.
“We are very pleased with our 2009 football schedule,” said Florida State Director of Athletics Randy Spetman. “”We think Seminole fans have a great slate of games to look forward to and I am particularly pleased we achieved a good balance between home and road games.
“With Miami, South Florida, Georgia Tech, NC State, Maryland and Jacksonville State all visiting Doak Campbell this fall, our fans will have a lot to look forward to beginning on Labor Day with the Hurricanes.”
The home schedule is highlighted by the season-opener versus Miami on a Monday night. The Seminoles and Hurricanes opened the 2004, 2005 and 2006 seasons versus one another before seeing the rivalry return to mid-season in 2007. The game between Miami and FSU, which will be broadcast to a national audience, was one of the most-watched games in the history of ESPN when it was played on Labor Day those three seasons.
Following the Miami game, Florida State will play Jacksonville State just five days later marking the only back-to-back home games on the 2009 schedule. This will be the second time FSU and Jacksonville State have faced off. In 1947 the Gamecocks traveled to Tallahassee and handed the Seminoles a 7-0 defeat. This will be the fourth time in the last five seasons that FSU will face an opponent just five days after playing on Labor Day.
FSU’s first road trip of the year will take the Seminoles to Provo, UT to face BYU. While this will be the third meeting between the schools it will be the first played on either team’s home field. The two teams played on neutral fields in 1991 (Anaheim, CA) and in 2000 (Jacksonville, FL). It will also mark the first time in Florida State football history that the Seminoles will play a game in Utah.
The Seminoles will wrap-up the month of September with their third home game as they welcome the University of South Florida. This will be the first-ever meeting between the schools and it is the first of a home-and-home series that will conclude with FSU traveling to Tampa September 29, 2012. The game marks the first time since 1995 that the Seminoles will face three opponents from the state of Florida when you include Miami and Florida. In 1995, FSU played UM, UF and Central Florida.
On October 3 the Seminoles will travel to Chestnut Hill to face Boston College in what has become a budding ACC rivalry. In 2007 the Seminoles knocked off third-ranked BC on the road. Last season the Eagles bumped FSU out of a conference championship game appearance with a win in Tallahassee. This is the earliest meeting between the teams since a September 17 game in 2005 played in Chestnut Hill.
The Seminoles continue ACC play at home the following weekend as Georgia Tech comes to Tallahassee for the first time since 2003. Last season the Yellow Jackets ended a 12-game losing streak to FSU despite the Seminoles near comeback from a double digit fourth quarter deficit. Florida State is 6-0 all-time at home against Georgia Tech.
The only open week of the 2009 season comes on October 17 and will give FSU time to prepare for a Thursday night game in Chapel Hill, NC. The October 22 meeting between the Tar Heels and Seminoles is the first game between the two schools since 2004. It will be the first meeting between the schools on a Thursday night as well. The Seminoles are 6-1 all-time in Chapel Hill with the only loss coming in 2001.
Conference play continues on October 31 versus NC State before FSU concludes the 2009 season with three of its final four games on the road. Following the game versus the Wolfpack, FSU will travel to Clemson, SC to face the Tigers on November 7 and then head to Wake Forest a week later on November 14. The trips to Clemson and Wake mark the only back-to-back road games on the 2009 slate for FSU.
The last home game of the season will take place on November 21 when the Maryland Terrapins come to town. The schedule concludes with a November 28 trip to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators.
Season Tickets for the 2009 season are available now for only $266. Buy now and enjoy the benefit of spreading the cost over as many as six months. For more information, visit Seminoles.com or call 1 (888) FSU-NOLE.
