Florida State fans are mourning the death of legendary former Florida State athletic director, assistant football coach and faculty member Vaughn Mancha who passed away on Thursday.
Mancha, who was a member of both the University of Alabama and FSU Halls of Fame, played a huge role in accelerating the popularity of Seminole Athletics through his ability to rub elbows with the most powerful figures in college athletics at the time. He was close friends with football coaches and athletic directors throughout the country and famous for being able to schedule games that few others could seem to arrange.
He was voted into the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982 and his biography from the program read...Vaughn Mancha was a consensus All-American center for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 1945. After two years with the Boston Yanks of the NFL, Mancha became head football coach and athletics director at Livingston State University in Alabama. In 1952, Mancha came to Florida State where he served for five years as an assistant football coach under Tom Nugent. After two years on leave in the Columbia University graduate school, Mancha returned to FSU as Director of Athletics, a post he held for 12 years. In his years as Athletics Director, Florida State moved ahead in all sports. Mancha's administrative leadership provided the kind of scheduling and coaching that took FSU into bowl games and NCAA playoffs. The development of the balanced athletics program fielded by Florida State University today is due in no small part to the foresight and leadership of Vaughn Mancha.
Mancha was voted the center on the Crimson Tide's prestigious All-Century Team (1900-1999) and remained active in Seminole athletics as a member of the Hall of Fame selection committee until 2003.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 7th, at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church downtown Tallahassee, FL.
