Fisher Improves Coaching Record
Today's victory by the Seminoles improves head coach Jimbo Fisher's career record at Florida State to 38-10 (.791). It gives him the ACC record for career wins in the first four years of coaching in the ACC. Fisher is now 24-7 (.774) against ACC foes, which includes ACC Championship games against Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech, and improves to 10-0 against ACC Atlantic Division opponents.
`Noles Extend Winning Streak Against ACC
Today's win over NC State gives FSU its 11th consecutive victory over an ACC opponent, the longest streak since FSU won 24 straight from Sept. 19, 1998 to Sept. 1, 2001. During its 11-game win streak, FSU has outscored its conference opponents 474-163.
FSU Off to 7-0 Start
The `Noles are off to their first 7-0 start since their 1999 National Championship season. It is the ninth time in program history Florida State has started the season 7-0, which including six times during the 1990s.
Defense Holding Their Own
Florida State's defense has now held the opposition to 20 or less points in 28 of its last 35 games. Since Jimbo Fisher took over the program in 2010, FSU's D has only given up 20 or more points 11 times spanning 48 games.
40 Points Again
Florida State's 49-17 win against NC State marks its seventh consecutive game of 40 points or more (every game this season). The streak is tied with the 1995 team for most consecutive games with 40 points or more.
Jameis Impresses in Limited Time
Playing just over a half of football, Jameis Winston had another impressive outing by going 16-of-26 for 292 yards passing and three touchdowns. Winston came within eight yards of setting the school record for consecutive 300-yard passing games with four.
Quite the First Quarter For Jameis
Redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston had a tremendous first quarter against NC State, passing for 229 yards. The last time an FSU quarterback passed for 200+ yards in a quarter was the third quarter at North Carolina on Oct. 22, 2009, when Christian Ponder tossed for 204 yards. Winston's 229 yards passing in the first quarter is the most passing yards in a single quarter since Chris Weinke threw for 238 yards in the first quarter against Duke on Oct. 10, 2000.
Brooks With the Pick and a Forced Fumble
On the game's second offensive play by the NC State offense, senior Terrence Brooks recorded his second interception of the season to set up FSU with good field position. He is the first `Nole to have multiple interceptions this season. He followed with a forced fumble on NC State's Johnathan Alston. The `Noles have now forced at least one turnover in 12 straight games.
Darby Gets Back-to-Back Picks
Ronald Darby recorded an interception for the second consecutive game, becoming the first `Nole to record interceptions in back-to-back games since Jamie Robinson in 2009. In that season, Robinson posted three consecutive games with interceptions against North Carolina, NC State and Clemson.
Most Points in a Quarter
Florida State's first five drives against NC State in the first quarter resulted in 35 points. The 35 points are the most scored in the first quarter by the `Noles this season, topping the 17 points scored against Clemson last week. It is also the most scored in the first quarter by FSU since scoring 35 against Savannah State in the first quarter last season. All-time, it ties the school record for points in a quarter against Savannah State (Sept. 8, 2012), Samford (Sept. 4, 2010) and Tulane (Nov. 14, 1992), marking four times FSU has reached 35 points in a quarter.
Pass Breakups Aplenty
Florida State's defense registered six pass breakups against NC State, tying its season high of six that it forced against Maryland earlier this season. It's the most breakups in a game by FSU since recording nine PBU's on Oct. 6, 2012, at NC State.
Whitfield Does It All
On his only carry of the game, a 31-yard reverse run for a score, Kermit Whitfield reached the end zone for the first time in his career. Whitfield also added a 16-yard reception and totaled 52 yards on two kickoff returns, equating to 99 all-purpose yards for the freshman.
Devonta Freeman's four-yard touchdown run with 3:06 left in the first half marked his second rushing score of the game. It is Freeman's sixth multiple-rushing touchdown performance of his career. He finished with 92 yards on 12 carries.
More Offensive Production
Florida State's 566 yards of total offense against NC State mark its third-highest total of the season, trailing its 617 yards against Nevada and its 614 yards versus Maryland. It is the fifth time this season the `Noles have reached 500 yards or more of total offense.
