FLORIDA STATE VS. NC STATE NOTES – OCTOBER 16, 2008
Florida State ran for 138 yards in its victory over NC State. Florida State has now recorded 100+ rushing yards in each of its six games this season, marking the first time since 2004 that the Seminoles have recorded six straight 100 yard rushing games and the first time since 2002 that FSU has started a season with six straight 100 yard rushing games.
SMITH’S OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION
Antone Smith’s third quarter 27-yard touchdown run in tonight’s game, which put the Seminoles ahead 13-10, marked the senior’s third straight game with a rush of 20 yards or more for a TD. He also recorded a 60-yard TD run in the win vs. Colorado in Jacksonville and a 20-yarder in the win at Miami.
The Pahokee, Fla., native now has 10 rushing touchdowns this season, after having 11 career rushing touchdowns heading into the 2008 season, which ranks 10th on FSU’s single-season rushing TD list. He is just the seventh player in FSU history to record 10 or more rushing TDs in a single season and the first player to do so since Warrick Dunn had 12 rushing TDs in 1996.
Smith now has 21 career rushing touchdowns which puts him in sole possession of seventh place on FSU’s career rushing touchdowns list ahead of the likes of Pooh Bear Williams (17), Dexter Carter (17) and William Floyd (16).
NC State’s 67-yard touchdown pass at the start of the fourth quarter is the longest TD that the Seminole defense has allowed this season. The previous was Chattanooga’s 62 yard pass for a TD. It is the longest TD by an opponent since the 2006 Emerald Bowl when UCLA completed a 78-yard TD pass in the first quarter.
Christian Ponder had a career night. He recorded the first 200-yard passing game of his career (254), his best completion percentage (23-of-35, 68 %), most completions (23), most attempts (35) and has completed a pass to seven or more receivers in four of six games this season.
Ponder’s Number of Receivers Per Game:
Western Carolina 8 Chattanooga 9
Wake Forest 6 Colorado 6
Miami 7 NC State 8
ROLLE-ING RIGHT ALONG
Safety Myron Rolle’s team-high eight tackles tonight marks the second time this season that the junior has led the team in tackles (Wake Forest was the other with 9) and the sixth time in his career with four of those games being against ACC teams.
- Graham Gano kicked a 53-yard field goal to become the first kicker in school history to kick field goals of 50 yards or more in three consecutive games.
BOWDEN CONFERENCE CALL
Members of the media may participate in a conference call with Coach Bowden on Friday, October 17th at 4 p.m. The number to call is 850-644-CALL (2255). This will take the place of his usual Sunday call.
SEVERAL FOR EVERETTE
It’s a good thing Everette Brown is popular with his teammates because he needed them this week when he had a large request for tickets to the NC State game. Thanks to the generosity of his teammates, Brown was able to secure 61 tickets for tonight’s game, including 50 for family members.
ALLOWING THE SCORE
NC State’s field goal on its first drive of tonight’s game marks the first time this season that the Seminole defense had allowed an opponent to score on its first drive. Before tonight, the last time an opponent scored on its first drive of the game was Kentucky in last season’s Music City Bowl. In that game, the Wildcats scored a TD on their first drive. The last regular season opponent to do so was Florida last season.
TRAILING AFTER ONE
Tonight marked the second time this season that the Seminoles have trailed after the first quarter. FSU also trailed 3-0 vs. Wake Forest and fell 12-3. The last time FSU trailed after the first quarter and came back to win the game was vs. NC State last year on October 7th. FSU trailed 10-7 after the first quarter and came back to win the game 27-10, shutting out the Wolfpack in the final three quarters.
The Seminoles have struggled defending the red zone as of late. In the first three games of the seasons, FSU held opponents to zero TDs in eight red zone appearances. In the last three games, opponents’ have scored five times in 10 red zone appearances.
Corey Surrency’s 31-yard reception in the final seconds of the second quarter setting up Graham Gano’s second FG of the game was FSU’s longest reception since the Chattanooga game. Surrency’s career long catch is 44 yards in the Chattanooga game.
TRAILING AT HALF
In the series with NC State under Bobby Bowden, FSU has now trailed NC State six times at the half. In the previous five times, the Seminoles have come back to win just twice. The last two times FSU trailed at half was in 2003 and 2004 and the Seminoles came back to win both those games.
