Hopkins Breaks a Pair of Scoring Records, Moves up NCAA List Place kicker Dustin Hopkins accumulated 15 points in tonight's game, including a first- half-ending and season-long 51 yard field goal with three seconds left that broke a pair of scoring records. Hopkins now has 402 career points and surpassed former Seminole Derek Schmidt (393 points) for the school scoring record. Hopkins also passed former Maryland Terrapin Nick Novak (393 points) for the ACC career scoring record. Hopkins' 26-yard field goal with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter placed him in sole possession of fifth place on the NCAA kicker scoring list, passing Miami's Carlos Huerta (1988-91). Hopkins is just the fifth kicker in NCAA history to total 400 or more career points.
Lawrence-Stample Making Some Noise Defensive tackle Niles Lawrence-Stample recorded four tackles in tonight's game against BC, marking a career high.
Noles contain BC's Rettig BC quarterback Chase Rettig entered tonight's contest 11th among FBS quarterback in passing yards per game at 306.2. The Seminoles held Rettig to a season-low 122 yards passing. The total was also his lowest since passing for 118 yards against NC State on Nov. 12, 2011. Rettig's previous season low this year was 219 yards passing against Maine on Sept. 8.
Forcing 3 and outs The Seminole defense came into tonight's game forcing a nation-leading 39 three-and-out series. Following their victory over BC, the Seminoles added to their totals with four more three-and-outs to reach a total of 43. Florida State has now forced a three-and-out in 43 of its 95 series played, equaling a 45.3 success percentage.
Total Yardage Comparison In 34 games coached, head coach Jimbo Fisher has helped the Seminoles outgain the opposition in total offense in 24 games following tonight's win over BC. The Seminoles outgained the Eagles 649-225, marking a 424 yard disparity. Through seven games, Florida State has now outgained its first seven opponents by 2,160 yards.
Rodney Extends Streak Senior wideout Rodney Smith made it 32 consecutive games with a catch as he opened the Seminoles' first drive of the game with a seven-yard reception on a second and 10 at the BC one-yard line. Smith's streak started back during his sophomore season against BYU (September 18, 2010). E.G. Green (1994-97) has the school record for most consecutive games with a reception at 38.
Touchdown on First Drive EJ Manuel found Kenny Shaw for a 77-yard touchdown reception on Florida State's first drive of the game. The scoring play marked the longest career reception for Shaw (previous record of 51 yards vs. Duke in 2011), longest career pass completion for Manuel (previous record 68 yards vs. UVa in 2011) and longest TD pass for Manuel (previous 50 yards vs. Duke in 2011). It also marked the first completed pass between 70 and 79 yards since Xavier Lee found De'Cody Fagg for a 70-yard game-winning touchdown against Alabama in Jacksonville on September 29, 2007. The 99-yard scoring drive was the longest for FSU since October 10, 2009 when Christian Ponder found Rod Owens for a 98-yard touchdown reception at North Carolina. It also tied the school record for the longest scoring touchdown drive with the last 99-yard TD drive coming at NC State on October 5, 2006.
Career First Half for Shaw Kenny Shaw hauled in 2 catches for a career-high 125 yards in the first half against Boston College. With his 100-yard receiving performance, Shaw became the first Seminole to record over 100 yards receiving this year and the first since Bert Reed tallied 104 yards receiving on four catches against Virginia in 2011. Shaw was on the receiving end of a 77-yard pass and 42-yard pass from Manuel in the first half.
Manuel Completion Percentage FSU quarterback EJ Manuel finished the game against BC 27-of-34 for a career-high 439 yards with a career-high four touchdowns and two INT. For his career, Manuel has completed 469-of-693 attempts good for a completion percentage of 67.7% which ranks him first all-time on the ACC career completion percentage list ahead of Virginia's Matt Schaub (67.0). Charlie Ward sits second in the FSU record books for career completion percentage at 62.3%.
Pryor Finds the End Zone Again in the Second Half Lonnie Pryor found the end zone for the second time in the game on the first Florida State drive in the third quarter scoring on a three-yard run. It marked Pryor's 16th career rushing touchdown and single-season career-high sixth rushing TD. Pryor pushed his career touchdown total to 21 - 16 rushing and five receiving - to lead all active `Noles. The 16 career rushing touchdowns for Pryor places him in a tie for 13th all-time in the Seminole record book with William McCray (1997-01) and William Floyd (1991-93).
Manuel & Smith Set Career-Highs Senior quarterback EJ Manuel set a career-high for passing yards with 439 while tying career-highs for passing touchdowns (4) and pass completions (27). He finished with 34 pass attempts, one shy of tying his career-high of 35. Manuel is the first FSU quarterback to throw for over 400 yards since Chris Weinke threw for 521 yards against Clemson in 2000. It also marked the first 400-yard performance by an FSU QB against BC. Manuel's 439 yards is the 10th best single-game performance in FSU history. Senior wideout Rodney Smith set a career-high in receptions and yards with nine and 108, respectively, Saturday night against BC. His previous high for receptions was six set twice with the last time coming against Louisiana-Monroe in 2011. His previous high in yards was 121 against Clemson in 2010. It marked Smith's third career 100-yard receiving game and first that did not come against the Clemson Tigers (121 yards - 2010; 118 yards - 2011).
Two 100-Yard Receivers Florida State finished Saturday night's game with two 100-yard receivers for the first time in 2012 and for the first time since October 8, 2011 at Wake Forest when Rashad Greene (12 receptions, 163 yards) and Christian Green (4 receptions, 102 yards) performed the feat. Kenny Shaw finished with two catches for 125 yards and Rodney Smith finished with nine catches for 108 yards.
Manuel Responsible for Four Touchdowns EJ Manuel finished Saturday night's game with four touchdown passes good for his second four-touchdown performance of his career. Manuel's first four touchdown performance came against Charleston Southern on September 10, 2011.
600-Yards of Offense Again For the fourth time this year and sixth time since 2000, Florida State eclipsed 600 yards of total offense finishing Saturday night's game against BC with 649 yards - the second most yards of total offense this year. It marked the 15th time FSU has rolled up 600 or more yards of total offense against ACC opponents as a conference member. Florida State also tied the 1995 team for the most 600 yards of total offense in a single-season. The 2012 team also joined the 1995 squad with multiple games of tallying at least 647 yards of total offense in a single-season. The 1995 team tallied three games of at least 647 yards (797 vs. Duke; 748 vs. Wake Forest; 745 vs. NC State)
Fourth Down Defense On Boston College's first drive of the game the Seminole defense held a goal-line stand on four downs. Opposing offenses are now 7 of 12 (58.3 percent) versus Florida State on fourth down attempts this season. Defensive end Bjoern Werner had a pass deflection and quarterback hurry on the goal-line stand, which started with first down for the Eagles at FSU's one-yard line.
Joyner Gets Big INT
Junior safety Lamarcus Joyner got his first pick of the season on BC's last drive of the half, intercepting a crossing pass and taking it to FSU's 44-yard line. The interception was Joyner's first of the season and sixth of his career.
