FSU Notes – September 24 vs. Clemson

FINAL NOTES

From Germany With Love

Bjoern Werner is coming off a dominating performance in the Seminoles showdown with No. 1 OU and the German defensive end keeps adding to his budding legacy. The sophomore recorded the first interception of his career and returned it for a TD as he brought FSU within four points at 21-17. It was the first defensive TD of the year for FSU and the first interception return for a TD since Nick Moody returned a pick for a touchdown against Maryland last year.

Over 100 Against The Tigers

Rodney Smith must enjoy playing the Tigers. The sophomore has two 100-yard receiving games in his career and both have come versus Clemson. Last year Smith caught four passes for 121 yards. In the third quarter he hauled in a 41-yard strike from Clint Trickett to give him 112 yards on the day. He finished with 118 yards.

Trickett To Greene Again

The Rashad Greene/Clint Trickett connection is getting downright scary. The pair has now connected on a TD in all four games this season and has combined for five total TDs. The five TDs have covered 28 yards, 29 yards, 30 yards, 56 yards and 69 yards. Greene is now tied for the third-most touchdowns by a freshman in a season. Greg Carr holds the record with nine.

Trickett Was A Treat

Making your first ever start in Clemson’s Death Valley is no easy task. Despite not getting the win, Clint Trickett responded to every challenge he faced. The freshman was 24-38 for 336 yards, he threw for three TDs and had just one INT. The first time starter joined Danny Kanell as the only QB’s to throw for over 300 yards in their first starts dating back to 1985. Trickett is the only freshman to pull it off.

More Yards, More Troubles?

You would think throwing for 250+ yards in your first ever start would probably mean good things but that has not been the case as of late for the Seminoles. Of the last six QBs making their first ever start for FSU only two threw for 250 yards or more and both lost. Clint Trickett threw for 336 yards in today’s loss and Xavier Lee threw for 286 yards in a 2006 loss to Maryland. The other four QBs making their first starts in that span all threw for 220 yards or less and they all won.

Workhorse

Chris Thompson was a workhorse for the Seminoles today. He was the only FSU player to get a handoff the entire game. The only other FSU player to register any rushing attempts was quarterback Clint Trickett. Thompson had all 11 carries for FSU in today’s game.

Workload

FSU running back Chris Thompson had his heaviest workload of the season in the first quarter alone Saturday thanks in part to the wildcat formation. Thompson tied a season-high in carries with six in the first quarter. He set his previous season high with six carries in the entire game versus ULM and Charleston Southern. The junior tailback’s all-time high is 25 set versus South Carolina in a Chick-fil-A Bowl victory. He went on to not only set a season-high in carries in the first half alone.

Tee Time

True freshman tight end Nick O’Leary, grandson of golfer Jack Nicklaus, made the first start of his career today at Clemson. O’Leary was heavily involved in the Seminole offense in the first quarter versus No. 1 Oklahoma in Tallahassee last week. Today he caught his fifth career pass on the opening drive of the game when he hauled in a Clint Trickett ball for 11 yards. O’Leary finished the half with three catches for 23 yards.

Keep The Streak Alive

Dustin Hopkins opened the scoring today with a 32-yard field goal. It extended his career high streak of consecutive field goals made to 14. He is now 7-for-7 in 2011. The junior extended his extra point streak of consecutive makes to 102 with three in today’s game. The school record is 108. Hopkins has made at least one PAT in each of his 31 career games.

Connecting From Long Range

Clint Trickett brought FSU back from a 14-3 deficit to close the lead to 14-10 on a 57-yard TD pass to Rodney Smith. It was the third straight game Trickett has connected on a TD pass of 50-yards or more. He threw TD passes of 69 yards versus Charleston Southern and then a 56-yarder versus Oklahoma. The 57-yard connection with Smith was the longest pass caught by Smith in his career.
