Bethune Cookman, Head Coach
"We played a good football team in Florida State tonight. I thought we hung in there with them toe to toe for a while. We made some mistakes that they capitalized on and that's what good teams do. Just in the first half alone, we had two big sacks, two dropped interceptions, an interception for seven and we miss-fielded two kickoff returns that pinned us back. Against any good ball club it would have been hard to win tonight. The good thing is, if you look at it, when we came out of the gate our guys were ready to play.
"We had the ball for seven minutes in the first quarter and if you look at halftime the stats were almost even. The good thing is we finished the game fighting and finished the game strong and we came out of it with pretty much no injuries. I still think we've got a good ball club. We went toe to toe with one of the top teams in the nation. We caused their quarterback probably to have more incompletions in this game then in the first two games combined so that's a plus. We caused a turnover down in the red zone.
"So for me, there is some good but there is some bad, too, that we've got to get corrected. I'm a coach that I'm looking at the fight in my team that I am impressed with, that I am proud of. I'm looking at the mistakes we made against any good ball club you would struggle to win. We just have to get those things fixed."
What was your defensive strategy entering the game?
"We were going to play physical against them. We weren't going to back down away from them. We didn't let the quarterback (Jameis Winston) scare us. We knew he would make some plays with his arm. We felt that if we could get to him and disrupt his rhythm a little bit that we could cause a disruption in their offense and we did. At times we had some broken coverages and he took advantage of them. That kid has a strong arm. You are looking at a future Heisman Trophy winner. I don't know if there is a better quarterback in the country right now - the only other kids I have seen playing better, or playing just as good, is (Teddy) Bridgewater. This kid - he's good. Like I said, we tried to disrupt him the best we could and I thought we did a decent job at that."
