Florida State vs. Savannah State Final Game Notes
Coker's First TD Toss Quarterback Jacob Coker threw his first-ever touchdown pass as a Seminole to wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin for a 19-yard score to help create a 55-0 lead early in the third quarter.
Werner Picks Up Another Sack Junior defensive end Bjoern Werner's performance of one sack and 1.5 tackles-for-loss places him on the Top 20 list at FSU for TFL's. Werner moves past former standout Noles Kamerion Wimbley and Corey Simon for 20th all-time with 23.5 TFL's.
Noles Pick Up Another Shutout Under defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, the Seminoles recorded their fourth shutout (since 2010) in a 55-0 game-shortened victory over Savannah State. FSU's other shutouts under Stoops occurred in 2010 against Wake Forest (31-0), and 2011 versus Louisiana-Monroe (34-0) and NC State (34-0). All four shutouts with Stoops have come at home.
Benjamin Grabs First Career Score; Picks up Multiple Touchdowns Redshirt freshman Kelvin Benjamin's first career touchdown reception came on a nine-yard grab with 7:57 left in the first quarter to give FSU a 28-0 lead. Benjamin then recorded his second TD grab in the third quarter for his first-ever multi-TD game of his young FSU career.
Hopkins' Streak Ends Senior place kicker Dustin Hopkins missed an extra point attempt with 8:02 remaining before the half. The miss caps his string of successful PAT's at 145, which is the sixth longest in NCAA history. It was the nation's longest active streak.
Wilder with Two More Tailback James Wilder Jr. recorded two more touchdown runs against Savannah State to increase his total to four rushing TD's this season. Wilder Jr. now has five rushing touchdowns in his Seminole career.
Smith Stretches Receptions Streak, Records Career-Long TD Senior wideout Rodney Smith extended his receptions streak to 27 straight games on a four-yard catch on Florida State's first offensive play of the game. The Miami, Fla., native followed with a career-long 61 yard touchdown catch, the eighth of his career. The TD pass was also the longest thrown by quarterback EJ Manuel, and came 39 seconds into the game. Smith finished the contest with three catches for a team-best 77 yards and a score.
Hauling in the Catch
With 12:33 left in the second quarter, redshirt junior wide receiver Willie Haulstead hauled in a 15-yard reception. It was his first grab since catching two passes against South Carolina in the Chik-Fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31, 2010.
