TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) -
Florida State, which has won three consecutive games, travels to play Tulsa of Conference USA in the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla., on Saturday, December 29 at 2:00 p.m. The Orange Bowl Classic is a one-day, two-game event with the Seminoles facing the Golden Hurricane in the first game of the doubleheader and Florida facing Air Force in the second game. Florida State's game against Tulsa is its second of five consecutive games away from Tallahassee - following its win over previously 11-1 Charlotte (79-76, December 22 at Charlotte), the Seminoles will travel to play in Sunrise, Fla., against Tulsa, at Auburn (January 2), at Clemson (January 5) and at Maryland (Jan. 9) before returning home to play host to No. 23 North Carolina on January 12. Including their game at Charlotte and Saturday against Tulsa, the Seminoles will play seven of nine games on the road before playing two games at home (January 30 against Maryland and February 2 against No. 1 ranked Duke.
FLORIDA STATE VS. TULSA - A SERIES HISTORY
Florida State will face Tulsa in the 19th Annual MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic on December 29, 2012 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. The Seminoles will face the Golden Hurricane in the first game of the doubleheader, followed by Florida and Air Force in the second game. The classic is a one-day, one-game event for each of the four teams. Florida State will play in the Orange Bowl Classic for the fourth time with its most recent appearance coming in an 82-69 win over Western Kentucky on Dec. 28, 2008. Florida State's game against Tulsa will mark the fourth meeting -- and the first since the second round of the Cabrillo Classic in 1982 - between the two teams. The Seminoles have a 3-0 record against the Golden Hurricane in the series that dates back to 1963. Tulsa is a member of Conference USA and finished in third place with a 10-6 record in league play in 2012. The Golden Hurricane is led by first year head coach Danny Manning who led Kansas to the National Championship in 1988. Florida State has faced Kansas twice in is basketball history -- in 1966 and 1989 - both games came before (1966) and after (1989) Manning's career at Kansas.
ALL-AMERICAN SNAER LEADS FLORIDA STATE TO WIN OVER CHARLOTTE
All-American Michael Snaer scored his career high of 30 points to lead Florida State to its 79-76 win over Charlotte at the Time Warner Cable Arena on December 22. Snaer scored his career high 30 points as he tied his career high with five made 3-point field goals, made eight total field goals and was nine of 10 from the free throw line. Snaer became the first Seminole to score 30 points since Chris Singleton scored 30 in the Seminoles' 78-53 win over Gardner Webb in Tallahassee on November 16, 2010. Snaer's 30-point performance moved him into fourth place in scoring in the ACC with a 15.8 points per game scoring average. He finished 10th in the ACC in scoring with a 14.0 points per game scoring average during the 2011-12 season.
SEMINOLES' THOMAS NAMED ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Florida State freshman guard Aaron Thomas, who averaged 17.0 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting .500 from the field (11 of 22) and .857 from the free throw line (12 of 14) as he played 68 total minutes (34.0 mpg) in two Seminole wins last week, was named the ACC Rookie of the Week on December 24, an award he shared with Oliver Hanlan of Boston College. Thomas made the first start of his career (in Florida State's win over Louisiana Monroe), made seven consecutive free throws and scored 22 of his 34 points (65 percent) for the week in the second halves of the Seminoles' two wins which raised their record to 7-4 with two non-conference games remaining before opening conference play at Clemson on January 5. It marked the first time Thomas has won the award.
FLORIDA STATE ONE OF ONLY THREE ACC TEAMS
Florida State's Michael Snaer (ACC Player of the Week, November 19) and Aaron Thomas (ACC Rookie of the Week, December 24) make the Seminoles one of only three teams in the ACC (also Duke and NC State) which has earned at least one Player of the Week and one Rookie of the Week honor so far this season.
LOOK FOR FLORIDA STATE TO...
...Defeat Tulsa and gain its season-high tying fourth consecutive win. The Seminoles also won four straight games with wins over Buffalo (95-68, November 12), BYU (88-70, November 16), Saint Joseph's (73-66, November 17) and North Florida (75-67, November 21) to raise its record to 4-1;
...Defeat Tulsa and win its third consecutive Orange Bowl Classic game. The Seminoles defeated Nebraska (74-60, December 31, 2005) and Western Kentucky (82-69, December 28, 2008) in its two previous appearances in the Orange Bowl Classic;
...Defeat Tulsa and win its sixth consecutive game against a team from Conference USA (founded in 1995). The Seminoles have played nine of the current 10 members of Conference USA at least once.
FLORIDA STATE'S HISTORY IN THE ORANGE BOWL CLASSIC
Florida State owns a 2-1 record in three previous Orange Bowl Classic appearances and enters the 2012 Classic having won two consecutive games with wins over Nebraska (in 2005) and Western Kentucky (in 2008).
FLORIDA STATE AT HALFTIME THIS SEASON
Florida State enters Saturday's game against Tulsa with a 6-0 record when it leads at halftime. The Seminoles recovered from a 40-35 halftime deficit against Charlotte as they outscored the 49ers, 44-46, in the second half to gain their 79-76 win on December 22. It marked the second time since its victory over Saint Bonaventure in the 2012 NCAA Tournament that the Seminoles recovered from a halftime deficit to win a game. Florida State trailed the Bonnies by a 34-28 scored before rallying for a 66-63 win. The win advanced the Seminoles to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
SEMINOLES SHOOTING WELL FROM LONG RANGE DURING CURRENT STREAK
Florida State, which ranks second in the ACC with a .396 3-point field goal shooting mark for the season, is shooting especially well during its current three game winning streak. The Seminoles average 8.3 3-point field goals made and are shooting .431 from the bonusphere in its three most recent wins against Maine, Louisiana Monroe and Charlotte.
A SEMINOLE BAROMETER IS SHOOTING WELL FROM THE 3-POINT LINE
Florida State averages nearly seven made 3-point field goals made per game in its 11 games this season and has shot especially well from long range in its seven wins. The Seminoles have made a season high of 11 3-point field goals in wins over BYU (November 16) and Maine (December 9) and made 10 their win over Buffalo (November 9) and have made the more 3-point field goals than all but three other teams (North Carolina, Duke and Virginia Tech) in the ACC.
