TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) -
Florida State, which has won four consecutive games, plays host to Minnesota in the 14th Annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles host the Golden Gophers in their second of a season-long six game homestand which began with a 75-67 win over North Florida on November 21 and runs through a home date with Louisiana Monroe on December 17. Florida State enters Tuesday's game against Minnesota having won four consecutive games - three in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic against Buffalo (95-68, Nov. 12), BYU (88-70, Nov. 16 in the semifinals of the event) and Saint Joseph's (75-67, Nov. 17 in the championship round of the event) and against North Florida. The Seminoles' games against BYU and Saint Joseph's were played at the newly opened Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Following Tuesday night's game against Minnesota, the Seminoles will play host to Mercer on Dec. 2 (Sunday) at 2:00 p.m. here at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
FLORIDA STATE IN THE ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE
Florida State, the 2012 ACC Champion, plays host to Minnesota in the 2012 Big 10 / ACC Challenge. It marks the fourth time the two teams will meet in the history of the challenge. The Seminoles are 2-1 against Minnesota in the first 13 years of the challenge and have helped the ACC win 10 of the 13 challenges that have been played. Florida State has won each of its last two games against Minnesota in the challenge with wins at Minnesota on 2004 (70-69) and in Tallahassee in 2007 (75-61). The Seminoles are 4-2 at home in the Donald L. Tucker Center in six challenge games played in Tallahassee.
FLORIDA STATE AGAINST MINNESOTA - A SERIES HISTORY
ACC Champion Florida State will play host to Minnesota in the 14th Annual ACC / Big Ten Challenge. It will mark the fourth time in the history of the challenge that the Seminoles will play Minnesota with Florida State holding a 2-1 advantage and having won two consecutive games against the Gophers. Florida State has won its last two games in the challenge with a 70-69 win on Nov. 29, 2004 (in Minneapolis) and a 75-61 win on Nov. 27, 2007 (in Tallahassee). Florida State leads the all-time series against Minnesota by a 4-3 margin with the first meeting between the two teams coming in the Sweet 16 of the 1972 NCAA Tournament as the Seminoles took a 70-56 win on its way to the championship game of the tournament. The Seminoles fell to UCLA, 81-76, in the national championship game.
SNAER NAMED TO ALL-AMERICAN CHECK LIST BY FRANK BURLISON OF FOX SPORTS
All-American Michael Snaer has been named as one of the nation's top five shooting guards by college basketball expert Frank Burlison of Fox Sports. Snaer was named along with Isaiah Canaan (Murray State), Nate Wolters (South Dakota State), C.J. McCollum (Lehigh) and Kenny Boynton (Florida).
SEMINOLES WIN COACHES' VS. CANCER CLASSIC; SNAER NAMED MVP
Florida State won the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic with wins over BYU (88-70/Nov. 16) and St. Joseph's (73-67/Nov. 17) at the newly opened and spectacular Barclay's Center in New York. In beating both the Cougars and the Hawks by a combined total of 24 points, the Seminoles defeated two teams who are both expected to enjoy strong seasons on the national stage. The Cougars were picked to finish in second place in the West Coast Conference in a vote of the leagues nine head coaches and the Hawks were selected as the preseason Atlantic 10 Conference champions in the preseason poll by the coaches and the media. Florida State's championship in the 2012 Coaches' vs. Cancer Classic marked the third regular season tournament (and fourth overall) in the last five seasons for Leonard Hamilton's Seminoles. Hamilton guided the Seminoles to titles at the 2008 Las Vegas Global Sports Classic Tournament and the 2009 Old Spice Classic along with the 2012 ACC Tournament championship.
SNAER WITH TWO AWARDS ALREADY THIS SEASON
Senior All-American Michael Snaer was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2012 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic and earned ACC Player of the Week honors on Nov. 19. It marked the second MVP award of Snaer's career - he was also named the MVP of the 2012 ACC Tournament and the second ACC Player of the Week Award for Snaer - he also earned the award on Jan. 23, 2012 after his buzzer-beating 3-point shot that lifted Florida State over then No. 6 ranked Duke in Durham. The Seminoles won that game 73-70 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
SNAER AND WHITE NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Senior All-American Michael Snaer and junior Okaro White were both named to the Coaches' vs. Cancer Classic All-Tournament team. For Snaer it marked his second All-Tournament team (also the 2012 ACC Tournament - for White it was the first All-Tournament honor of his career. Snaer and White were named to the CvC All-Tournament team along with Tyler Hawes (BYU), Jack Cooley (Notre Dame) and Ronald Roberts (Saint Joseph's).
FLORIDA STATE ON QUITE A ROLL
Florida State enters Tuesday's game against Minnesota having won 20 of its last 25 games (.800 winning percentage) since a 64-59 win over Virginia Tech on Jan. 10, 2012. The Seminoles closed their 2011-12 season by winning 16 of their final 20 games including all three in the ACC Tournament (against Miami, No. 6 Duke and No. 4 North Carolina) to win the first ACC Championship in school history at the Philips Arena in Atlanta.
SNAER IS A CONSENSUS PICK AS A PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
Senior All-American Michael Snaer is recognized as one of the top college basketball players in the nation. He has been named to virtually every pre-season All-American team, the preseason All-ACC Team and was the runner-up for the preseason ACC Player of the Year award as voted on by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
