SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO (seminoles.com) -
Florida State, which defeated No. 10/10 VCU, 85-67, on Thursday night faces No. 13/14 Michigan in the semifinal round of the 2013 Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 5:00 (ET) at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Seminoles will face Michigan for the third time in school history and for the first time since the first round of the 2007 NIT - a game won by the Seminoles, 87-66, in Tallahassee. Florida State's victory over No. 10/10 VCU was its first over a ranked team since the 2012 ACC Championship game when the Seminoles topped No. 4 North Carolina, 85-82, to win the first ACC Championship in school history. The Seminoles have now defeated 28 nationally ranked teams in the 12-year tenure of two-time ACC Coach of the Year Leonard Hamilton. A total of 15 of those wins have come against top 10 ranked teams. Following tonight's game against Michigan, the Seminoles will face either Charlotte or Northeastern in the third round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
FLORIDA STATE VS. MICHIGAN - A SERIES HISTORY
The Seminoles will face Michigan in semifinals of the 2013 Puerto Rico Shootout on November 22. It marks the Seminoles' third meeting against the Wolverines with both of those games coming in the postseason NIT. The Seminoles and the Wolverines have split the first two games of the series leaving a 1-1 series record. This game will mark the first matchup against Michigan since competing in the NIT on March 15, 2007 at home in the Donald L. Tucker Center - an 87-66 Seminoles' win. The Seminoles are 3-2 against teams from the state of Michigan, with its last game coming against Michigan State, a 65-49 loss in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge on the road at the Breslin Center on Nov. 30, 2011. Florida State is 16-23 when playing teams from the Big 10.
WHITE MOVES CLOSER TO 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Senior Okaro White scored 14 points in Florida State's victory over VCU and enters Friday's game against Michigan with 974 career points. He needs only 26 points to become the 43rd player in school history to score 1,000 or more career points.
MILLER PUSHES HIS CAREER HIGH UP EVEN FURTHER
Senior Ian Miller scored a career-high 22 points in the Seminoles' victory over VCU to mark the second consecutive game during which he has scored his career high. He tied his career high (entering the 2013-14 season) of 18 points at UCF on Nov. 13, bettered that with a career-high 20 points against UT Martin on Nov. 17 and went even higher with his career high of 22 points Florida State's win over VCU. Miller enters Friday's game against Michigan averaging a career-high 17.0 points per game.
BRANDON RECORDS HIS FIRST CAREER DOUBLE DOUBLE AGAINST VCU
Sophomore guard Montay Brandon totaled his first career double double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in the Seminoles' 85-67 win over VCU. He finished one point short of his career high (15 against Jacksonville in the Seminoles' 2013-14 season opener) and totaled his career high of 11 rebounds. It marked the second time this season that he has earned at least nine rebounds in a game (he totaled his previous career high of nine in Florida State's win over UCF on Nov. 13) and enters Friday's game against Michigan averaging career-highs of 10.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in the first four games of the season.
BOOKERT TIES HIS CAREER HIGH FOR POINTS SCORED
Sophomore Devon Bookert tied his career high with 18 points against VCU - the career-high fourth consecutive game he has scored in double figures. He has now scored at least 16 points in three of the Seminoles first four games this season and enters Friday's game against Michigan averaging a career-high 16.0 points per game.
LOOK FOR FLORIDA STATE TO...
...Defeat Michigan and win its fifth consecutive game to begin the 2013-14 season. It would mark the second time in the last three seasons and mark the fifth time under Leonard Hamilton that the Seminoles have begun a season with wins in their first five games of a season;
...Defeat Michigan and beat a nationally ranked team on consecutive days for the first time since March 10, 2012 (No. 6 Duke, 62-59) and March 11, 2012 (No. 4 North Carolina, 85-82) when the Seminoles topped the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels in the semifinals and the finals the ACC Tournament to win the 2012 ACC Championship;
...Defeat Michigan and gain a win over a Big 10 team for the first time since Nov. 27, 2008 when the Seminoles defeated Minnesota, 75-61, in Tallahassee in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge. The Seminoles will travel to play at Minnesota in the challenge this season on Dec. 3.
