GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Florida State University men's basketball team was selected to finish fifth in the 2006-07 Atlantic Coast Conference Standings and senior forward Al Thornton was named to the pre-season All-ACC First Team in a vote by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association at the 38th Annual ACC Operation Basketball media gathering at the Grandover Hotel.
Thornton was also selected as the runner-up as the pre-season ACC Player of the Year behind North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough. He was tied in the voting with Josh McRoberts of Duke.
Florida State's pre-season fifth-place prediction is the third highest the Seminoles have be picked since joining the ACC for the 1991-92 season. The upper-echelon selection is the highest for the Seminoles since coming in as the pre-season ACC runner-up in 1992 and 1993. Florida State was predicted to finish 11th a year ago but finished fifth in the standings with a 9-7 record in conference play. In finishing fifth during the 2006-07 season, the Seminoles finished six spots higher then they were thought to finish in the pre-season poll. The 2005 season marked the third time that the Seminoles have finished higher than predicted with the other times coming in 1994 and 1996. The Seminoles were predicted seventh and finished fifth in 1994 and selected eighth and finished seventh in 1996.
The Seminoles earned one vote for second place and one vote for third place in receiving 410 total points in this season's pre-season poll. The North Carolina Tar Heels earned 59 of the 62 first place votes in earning the pre-season nod as the ACC's top team. Duke was the pre-season selection in 2006 and won the ACC Tournament championship with a victory over Boston College. The pre-season selection to win the championship has won the championship six times since 1990.
Thornton, a pre-season All-ACC First-Team selection, is the second Seminole player in the last three seasons under Head Coach Leonard Hamilton to be named to the pre-season All-ACC First-team. Tim Pickett was named to the pre-season All-ACC team prior to the 2003-04 season - he became Florida State's second ever All-ACC First-Team selection at the end of the season. Thornton was an All-ACC Second-Team selection after average a career-high 16.1 points per game in 2006 and is a pre-season All-America Second-Team selection by the 2007 Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.
