TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) - Fifteen Florida State student-athletes, including United States Olympian and Seminole All-American Maurice Mitchell, earned degrees during summer commencement ceremonies held Aug. 11 at the Donald L. Tucker Center on campus. Mitchell, along with three members of the nationally-ranked Seminole football team and one member of the ACC Champion men's basketball team, completed their degree requirements and put an exclamation point on the 2011-12 academic year.

Mitchell, who advanced to the semifinals of the 200-meter run on Aug, 8 at London's Olympic Stadium, earned his degree in interdisciplinary social sciences. The two-time NCAA outdoor champion in the 200 meters and 11 -time ACC champion left quite a legacy at Florida State. He can now add college graduate to his resume.

"I'm so happy to finish all four years and finish my degree," said Mitchell. "My parents as well are really happy I received my degree. I'm glad I can be a role model for many young people and make them believe anything is possible and that school is just as important as athletics are. "

The group of six football players - Garrett Faircloth (sociology), Jabaris Little (interdisciplinary social sciences), Rhonne Sanderson (economics), Will Secord (interdisciplinary social sciences), Toshmon Stevens (criminology) and Anthony McCloud (social science) - were all members of the Seminoles' 2010 Chick-fil-A and 2011 Champs Sports Bowl championship teams. Faircloth (offensive line), Stevens (defensive end) and McCloud (defensive tackle) are all expected to be front line players for the Seminoles in 2012.

The Seminole football team will begin the 2012 season with 11 players on the roster who have received their degrees.

Jeff Peterson, who played in integral role in helping Florida State win its first ever ACC Championship in basketball, earned his master's degree in marketing. He earned his undergraduate degree in marketing from the University of Arkansas and played his final season of collegiate eligibility for Leonard Hamilton's Seminoles. Florida State finished with a 25-10 overall record, a 12-4 record in the ACC and were ranked No. 10 in the final Associated Press poll in 2012.

"This is been a great period in my life and I am now prepared to move forward into the world," said Peterson. "I have been fortunate to earn two degrees from two wonderful academic intuitions and I played basketball at a very high level at the same time. Florida State University was all I could have hoped for; I earned my master's degree, played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in my career and was part of an ACC Championship team. I am very thankful for Coach Ham giving me the opportunity to continue my career as a Seminole and to my teammates for being such great friends."

Maria Salinas, a captain of the 2012 women's golf team who earned All-American and All-ACC honors twice each and played in three NCAA Tournament teams, earned her degree in international affairs.

Visnja Djurdjevic and Patricia Figueiredo, members the Seminoles' first NCAA Final Four team in indoor volleyball, earned their degrees in social science and applied economics. Djurdjevic was named AVCA All-American Honorable Mention and earned All-ACC honors for the second time in her two-year career. The Seminoles won a near school record 28 matches and their third ACC Championship in school history.
