TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) -
Florida State, which has won six of its last seven home games against Miami, plays host to the Hurricanes on Monday, February 11, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee. The Seminoles' game against the Hurricanes is their first ever appearance on ESPN's Big Monday package and its first of two consecutive weeks appearing on the Big Monday telecast. The Seminoles will play host to North Carolina on February 18 in their second consecutive and second ever Big Monday appearance next Monday in Tallahassee. Florida State's game against Miami is their second of the season with the Seminoles' taking a 63-53 win on January 15 in Coral Gables. The Seminoles most recently swept the regular season series against Miami during the 2011 season with wins in both Coral Gables (January 19, 2011; 55-53) and in Tallahassee (February 26, 2011; 65-59). Following Monday's game against Miami, the Seminoles travel to play at Wake Forest on Saturday, February 15, at 8:00 p.m.
SEMINOLES HONOR SERVICEMEN AND SERVICEWOMEN
The Florida State Seminoles Men's Basketball team will welcome nearly 400 servicemen and servicewomen to the Donald L Tucker Center on Military Night against the Miami Hurricanes. Amongst the members to be honored includes the FSU Student Veterans, National Guard, Reserves, FSU ROTC and their families.
THE UNBALANCED ACC SCHEDULE
Florida State plays host to Miami on Monday as it completes its two-game regular season series against the Hurricanes. At the end of their game against Miami, the Seminoles will have completed their ACC schedules against Clemson (two games), Maryland (two games), Miami (two games), Virginia (two games), Duke (one game), Notre Dame (one game), NC State (one game) and Virginia Tech. Beginning with Wake Forest on Saturday, the Seminoles will play the Deacons (one game), North Carolina (one game), Pittsburgh (one game), Georgia Tech (one game), Boston College (one game) and Syracuse (one game) all for the first time after finishing four two-game series and games against four other ACC teams.
Aaron Thomas AS A STARTER
Sophomore Aaron Thomas has earned starting assignments against Notre Dame (January 21) and in the Seminoles' last two games against Virginia Tech (February 5) and at Maryland (February 9). Thomas is averaging 20.3 points while shooting .733 (11 of 15) from the 3-point line and 1.000 (14 of 14) from the free throw line as a starter.
SEMINOLES' HAMILTON RANKED 11TH IN OVERALL WINS IN ACC HISTORY
Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton, who led the Seminoles to the 2012 ACC Championship, enters Saturday's game ranked 11th in ACC history in overall wins at Florida State. He is one of three current coaches (also Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams) to be ranked in the top 11 for all-time wins as ACC coaches.
WHITE APPROACHING SPECTACULAR TRIPLE DOUBLE
Senior Okaro White needs only nine blocked shots to become the third player in school history with 1,200 career points (he has 1,212), 600 rebounds (he has 618) and 100 blocked shots (he needs nine for 100). Only Douglas Edwards and Randy Allen have attained those numbers.
LOOK FOR FLORIDA STATE TO...
...Defeat Miami and gain a regular season sweep of the Hurricanes as ACC opponents for the third time in the last five seasons and for the fifth time in the last eight seasons. The Hurricanes joined the ACC for the 2004-05 season;
...Defeat Miami and win its seventh home game in the last eight meetings against Miami. The Seminoles won six consecutive home games from 2007-2012 and lead the all-time series in Tallahassee by a 27-6 margin.
FLORIDA STATE FINDING THEIR WAY FROM THE FREE THROW LINE
Florida State enters Monday's game against Miami ranked sixth in the ACC with a .715 free throw shooting percentage. The Seminoles have shot better than 80 percent in each of their last three games and have made better than 80 percent of their free throws seven times in 23 games this season. Florida State ranked second in the ACC statistics during the 2012-13 season with a .735 team free throw shooting mark and has shot .700 or better from the line in six of the last eight seasons.
SEMINOLES RANK AS ONE THE OF ACC'S TOP FREE THROW SHOOTING TEAMS
Florida State is the only team in the ACC with two players - Ian Miller (third, .870) and Aaron Thomas (sixth, .839) - ranked in the top 10 for individual free throw shooting percentages. The Seminoles enter Monday's game against Miami with three regulars (Miller, Thomas and sophomore Devon Bookert) all shooting better than 80 percent from the free throw line for the season.
FLORIDA STATE CONTINUES TO SHOOT WELL FROM THE 3-POINT LINE
Florida State, which is shooting .500 from the 3-point line in the last two games, is the second best 3-point shooting team in the ACC. The Seminoles are ranked second in the ACC for all games (119 of 318, .374) and for ACC games only (66 of 157, .420). Florida State has realized one of the most dramatic improvements in its 3-point shooting percentage in league history as it has improved its shooting percentages from long range by more than 10 percentage points in ACC play. Florida State averages 6.0 3-point field goals made in ACC play this season after averaging 5.0 3-point shots made in 18 ACC games in 2012-13.
FLORIDA STATE AGAINST MARYLAND FROM THE BONUSPHERE
Florida State shot .583 from the 3-point arc in two regular season games against Maryland this season. The Seminoles made an ACC record 16 3-point field goals in their win over the Terps in Tallahassee (16-24, .667) and made five of 12 shots (.417) from long range against the Terrapins in College Park.
