TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) - The Garnet squad wrapped up the fall season for the Florida State Baseball team defeating the Gold squad, 4-3 on Friday, November 4 at Dick Howser Stadium in the 28th Annual Garnet and Gold scrimmage.

Friday's game saw a lot of new faces on Mike Martin Field as the freshman and sophomore pitchers took to the mound and allowed a combined seven runs over nine innings.

Brandon Leibrandt and Mike Compton both threw two scoreless innings for the Garnet squad, while Jose Brizuela pitched a perfect ninth to pick up the save. For the Gold team, Luke Weaver and Brandon Johnson threw a pair of scoreless and hitless innings as both pitchers registered two strikeouts. Gage Smith pitched a scoreless ninth for Gold as he allowed just one walk.

"I was very pleased with the way our pitchers performed tonight," said head coach Mike Martin. "Leibrandt certainly had a good outing and Weaver's fighting for a starting role, I can tell you that right now. The guy [Weaver] was throwing those hurry-up fastballs. He was getting it up there quickly."

At the plate, freshman Josh Delph paced the Garnet squad going 2-for-4 with a double as the center fielder took home MVP honors at the conclusion of Friday's game. His two runs helped lead the Garnet team to a one-run victory as his second run in the eighth put Garnet ahead for good.

Senior James Ramsey and freshman Giovanny Alfonzo paced Gold with two hits apiece, while freshman John Nogowski drove in two of the three runs for the Gold team.

"There were a number of impressive outings, but the one thing I will take away from tonight is that our guys have got to improve their thought process in pitch selection," added Martin. "We haven't had a chance to do a lot of our drills, because of the field. We probably swung at more bad pitches in three innings than we did in three games last year."

The Gold team registered the first hit of the game as freshman Bert Givens singled to lead off the third inning, but he was left on base as Gold could not produce any more hits.

The bottom of the fifth was the next chance for Gold to get its first run of the series as Sherman Johnson drew a two-out walk, followed by a double off the bat of Alfonzo. Johnson tried scoring from first on the play but was thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning to keep the game scoreless.

Justin Gonzalez broke the scoreless game in the top of the sixth leading off with a walk and scoring on a sac-fly from Brizuela. But the Gold team would answer right back to tie the game at one with back-to-back doubles to open the bottom of the sixth. Ramsey led-off with a double of the right field fence and scored on double by Nogowski.

Garnet looked to take the lead back in the seventh with a double from Delph and a walk from both Lee Howard and Gonzalez that loaded the bases with one out. John Holland brought in Delph on an RBI groundout that got Howard to third and Gonzalez to second. Jayce Boyd walked to load the bases for a second time but nothing further came out of the inning for the Garnet team as Jordan Priddle got Brizuela swinging on strikes for out number three.

Gold answered the call once again as Johnson walked, moved to second on a single by Alfonzo and scored on Ramsey's second double of the day in the seventh. Ramsey's double also placed an eager Alfonzo on third base, who scored a batter later as Nogowski grounded out to second base. Gold finally had its first lead of the Garnet and Gold series; however, the team could not produce any more runs that inning.

Garnet went into the eight needing just two runs to reclaim the lead and they got just that. Stephen McGee singled to start the inning and tied the game at three off of an infield single from Howard. Delph, who registered a one-out single, would score the eventual game-winner on a throwing error from second base to give Garnet a 4-3 lead.
