Sept. 20, 2013
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - With the fall baseball season officially getting underway on Sunday, September 22, Florida State made early headlines as its 2013-14 baseball recruiting class earned its first national ranking of the season. The Seminoles checked in at No. 3 according to Collegiate Baseball newspaper's annual evaluation of NCAA Division I baseball classes.
The rankings are based on players who enroll at school each fall. Athletes who initially signed with a school and then signed a pro contract after being selected in the MLB Draft do not count in the overall evaluation.
The Seminoles welcome 13 newcomers to this year's recruiting class including 11 freshmen and two JUCO transfers. The class is made up of six pitchers (including one left hander), two infielders, one outfielder, one catcher and three utility players (listed on the roster at two or more positions including pitcher and catcher).
"We are just very proud that our recruiting class is ranked where it is," Florida State head coach Mike Martin said. "It is a direct result of the tremendous job our recruiting coordinator, Mike Martin, Jr., and Mike Bell, our pitching coach, did in bringing quality talent to Tallahassee. We are anxious to get this fall season started and I know the young men are looking forward to it as well."
Five student-athletes in this year's class were selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft - four in 2013 and one in 2012. Those five individuals include Ben DeLuzio (3rd round, Miami), M.T. Minacci (20th round, Colorado), Taylor Blatch (27th round, Minnesota), Daniel De La Calle (33rd round in 2012, Texas) and Alec Byrd (37th round, Cincinnati).
"This class is very versatile with a great deal of athleticism which is something very hard to find these days," Martin said. "We will look to play a faster brand of baseball now and in the future due to the athletic make-up of this class. The pitchers are very polished and we will look for them to come in and help us right away.
"The position players give us a solid nucleus for the years to come. This group also provides above average power at the plate but with the ability to run. We are really excited about this year's group to see how they develop and mature throughout the season."
The fall Garnet and Gold game will be held Thursday, October 17 and Friday, October 18 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively, on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The veteran pitchers will throw on Thursday with the newcomers pitching on Friday. The Seminoles will also host the Ontario Blue Jays for the second year in a row as that game will take place on Monday, October 21 at 3 p.m. in the final scrimmage of the fall season.
