TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - For the second straight year, the Florida State baseball team is at the top of the class in the Atlantic Coast Conference leading all schools with a league-best six student-athletes on the 2013 All-ACC Baseball Academic Team.

Heading up this year's team is junior relief pitcher Gage Smith, who was named the 2013 ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Smith becomes the third Seminole to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades and fourth since the league started the academic team in 2006. It also marks the third year in a row that Florida State has claimed the ACC's top scholar-athlete. Smith joins Buster Posey (2008) and back-to-back winner James Ramsey (2011 & 2012) as past recipients of the award.

Smith led the team in appearances for the second year in a row working in 35 of FSU's 64 games in 2013. He has become one of the most reliable arms out the bullpen for the Seminoles over the last two years tallying 74 relief appearances and 94.0 innings during that span. The Tallahassee, Fla., native finished the year at 4-2 with one save and a 2.41 ERA in 41.0 innings of work. Smith held opponents to a .233 batting average while recording 32 strikeouts and walking just eight. He allowed more than one run in just three of his 35 relief appearances.

The side winding right hander was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV first team in 2013. Smith is a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll while he has been named to two All-ACC Academic teams. He has earned Dean's List honors three times at Florida State and has been named to the President's List (4.0 GPA) on three separate occasions as well. Smith, who is majoring in marketing, has accumulated a career GPA of 3.805.

Other Seminoles joining Smith on this year's team include Josh Delph (So., Social Science Education), Brandon Leibrandt (So., Sport Management), Stephen McGee (Jr., Hospitality Management), Peter Miller (Jr., Criminology) and Seth Miller (Sr., Sport Management).

Delph is making his first appearance on the academic team, while Leibrandt, McGee, Peter and Seth Miller and Smith are all two-time honorees.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

As a team, Florida State did an outstanding job in the classroom this past spring posting a cumulative team GPA of 3.061. Eighteen Seminoles earned a GPA of a 3.0 or better while three student-athletes made the President's List with a 4.0 GPA and eight others made the Dean's List. A total of 19 Seminole baseball players will enter the 2013-14 academic calendar with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
