Bucknell Pulls The Upset With 7-0 Win Over FSU In Second Game Of Tallahassee Regional

May 30, 2008

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Bucknell may be the No. 4 seed in the Tallahassee Regional, but that sure didn't stop the Bison as they earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with a dominating 7-0 win over No. 1 seed Florida State Friday in the regional's second game at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. Bucknell had 13 hits while Bison pitcher Mathew Wilson (6-1) recorded a complete-game shutout, allowing just six Florida State hits.

With the victory, Bucknell (30-22-2) advanced in the winner's bracket and will face No. 3 seed Tulane (38-20-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday. FSU (48-11) will play No. 2 seed Florida (34-23) in an elimination game at 1:07 p.m. (Sun Sports TV).

After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Bison wasted no time in putting runs on the board. In the top of the second, Bucknell scored three runs off of four base hits. Right fielder Andrew Brouse drew a walk to start the inning, advanced to second on an error and went on to score on a single to right center by catcher Shawn Hirsch. Three of the next four batters singled scoring two more runs.

Bucknell added another run in the third inning, leading off with a single to center by Jason Buursma who advanced to third on a one-out double by left fielder Austin Turban. FSU starting pitcher Geoff Parker was replaced by Bo O'Dell but second baseman Ben Yoder recorded his second hit of the game to score Buursma.

While the Seminoles managed just two hits through the first three innings, the Bison continued to run up the score with three more runs in the fourth inning. For the third straight inning, Bucknell put its leadoff hitter on base and recorded hits from its first two batters of the inning. With one out, Buursma doubled to left field to score the first run. Turban flied out to center to score a run and Hirsch recorded his second RBI of the game with a single to left. With two out, FSU's Ryan Strauss went in to pitch and retired the side.

Strauss held Bucknell hitless for three and a third innings but the Seminoles could not get anything going offensively and had just 10 base runners the entire game. Bucknell managed just one hit in the final four innings of the game but came away with the convincing victory.
