FSU Baseball Release No. 21 in PDF Format

Tallahassee, Fla. - Florida State concludes its regular season schedule with a three-game conference set against NC State beginning Thursday, May 15. The Seminoles lead the all-time series 45-21 including a record of 20-5 on their home turf. Since joining the ACC back in 1992, FSU has never dropped a series to the Wolfpack in Tallahassee taking all eight series including three sweeps. The two schools have split the last 10 games as four have been decided by two runs or less including three one-run ball games going in favor of Florida State (2-1).

The last time these two schools squared off at Dick Howser Stadium was in the final week of the 2006 regular season for both teams. FSU won the first two games squeaking out an 11-10 victory in game one and then winning game two 7-1. The Wolfpack concluded the series with a 15-7 victory in the finale. Last year, the Seminoles once again took 2-of-3 from the Pack this time in Raleigh winnings games one (10-4) and three (6-5).

Against The Wolfpack
The Seminoles hitters have a solid history of producing runs against Wolfpack pitching as they have averaged 7.6 runs per game and hit .334 against NC State in the last two years. Jack Rye, Dennis Guinn and Buster Posey have combined for six home runs and 19 RBIs against the Wolfpack in their careers. Rye was excellent in 2006 when he hit .429 with four runs scored, three doubles, two home runs and six RBIs in the five game season series. Tommy Oravetz has also had success as he has driven in three runs in six games coming off the bench.

Florida State returns two pitchers who have had success in their careers against NC State in Jimmy Marshall and Matt Fairel. Marshall has pitched 10.0 innings in three appearances against the Wolfpack and allowed just four runs while striking out seven. Fairel worked a perfect inning of relief against NC State last year and will be the starting pitcher for the Seminoles on Thursday night.

In ACC Play
Dating back to the final series of the 2006 season, Florida State has won 17 of its last 20 ACC series including 11 sweeps. Of the three series that FSU has lost only one has come on the road that coming against North Carolina this year at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The first series loss during this span came at the hands of Clemson as the Tigers took 2-of-3 from FSU in Tallahassee. With only one conference series remaining on the schedule in 2008, Florida State has swept Maryland, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Boston College and Clemson while taking 2-of-3 from Wake Forest. With a three game sweep of Clemson in South Carolina, FSU captured its second consecutive ACC Atlantic Division title. The Seminoles' 10-0 start in league play marked the third time in school history that FSU started a season undefeated through the first 10 games. It was FSU's best start in the conference since starting 13-0 back in 1999. In 1996, the Seminoles ran out to a 17-0 start.

Divisional Conference Breakdown
Now in its third season of using a divisional breakdown in the ACC, Florida State has posted a record of 32-9 against team in the Atlantic Division including a mark of 15-3 at home. FSU is 4-2 against NC State since the conference adopted the two division format and 2-1 against the Wolfpack in Tallahassee. The Seminoles are 30-15 against teams in the Coastal Division. Last year, FSU claimed its first ACC Atlantic Division title en route to earning the No. 1 overall seed in the ACC Tournament. With a mark of 24-6 last year, the Seminoles set the school record for the most conference wins in a season surpassing the previous record of 22-2 set in 1999. The 24 victories also tied for the most wins recorded in ACC history (Clemson - 24 in 2006).

NC State owns a record of 27-15 against Atlantic Division foes including a mark of 12-9 on the road. The Wolfpack are 9-3 against members of the Atlantic this year compared to FSU's 11-1 mark. Off the schedule for both teams this year were Georgia Tech for NC State and Duke for Florida State.

Posey In Rare Company
Buster Posey is having one of those seasons that many college baseball players only dream of having. The junior catcher leads the nation in five offensive statistical categories including batting average (.469), hits (91), total bases (165), on-base percentage (.571) and slugging percentage (.851). He also ranks in the top 10 in runs per game (6th) and runs (3rd). In the ACC, Posey leads in eight categories while ranking in the top 10 in three others. He currently sits atop in the league in batting average, hits, runs scored, runs batted in, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage and tied for first with 16 home runs. On top of all that, he is also batting .477 in 27 league games to pace the ACC.
