TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Fourth-ranked Florida State (36-11) will look to improve on its 3-0 start in the month of May as the Seminoles embark on a four-game road trip that begins in DeLand as the Seminoles face Stetson (20-29) for the third and final time this year on Tuesday, May 6 at 6:00 p.m.
The Noles are 2-0 against the Hatters in 2014 as the first two games came in Tallahassee as the Seminoles won both contests outscoring the Hatters 17-3 including a 4-0 shutout in game one.
In game one, three pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout in the 4-0 victory. Starter Billy Strode went 6.0 innings giving up just two hits and a walk while tying a season-high with five strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.
In game two, FSU broke open a two-run ball game with five runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Hitters 6-9 in the Seminole line-up registered seven of FSU's 12 hits including a three-hit performance from John Sansone.
FSU leads the all-time series 54-22 and 20-9 against the Hatters when playing in DeLand. The Seminoles have won six straight in the series and two in a row inside Melching Field. Florida State has won nine of its last 10 games against Stetson in DeLand dating back to 2005 with five of those contests being decided by four runs or less including three one-run games (FSU 2-1). Stetson's last win in the series was a one-run victory in DeLand back on May 9, 2012, a 6-5 win for the Hatters.
Florida State swept the four-game series last year as the Seminoles outscored the Hatters 46-11. FSU scored in double figures in three of those games including 14 runs twice.
Since 2005, 10 of the 23 games in the series have been decided by four runs or less with the Noles owning a record of 8-2 during that span.
Among the list of winningest active D1 coaches by victories, FSU head coach Mike Martin and Stetson head coach Pete Dunn rank second (1,806) and eighth (1248), respectively.
Sophomore right hander Kenny Burkhead gets the start Tuesday night against Stetson, marking his second start of the season and second of his career. Burkhead's first career start came at USF back on March 5 as he went 1.0 plus innings allowing a run on two hits as he walked one and struck out one.
The Deltona, Fla., native has two career appearances against Stetson - both coming last year. Burkhead worked a pair of scoreless innings in relief and struck out two in his last appearance in DeLand. On the year, Burkhead is 1-0 with a 9.39 ERA in nine appearances as he has seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings.
