Four Seminoles Earn Academic All-District Honors

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State was recognized with four student-athletes on the 2014 Capital One Baseball Academic All-District ® IV team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The list includes pitchers Mike Compton and Gage Smith and outfielders Josh Delph and DJ Stewart.

Compton is 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 10 starts after missing the entire 2013 season due to Tommy John surgery to his right elbow. In 2014, the Branson, Mo., native has worked 55.0 innings with 34 strikeouts while throwing his first career complete game shutout against Maryland back on March 9. Compton is a two-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2012. He is a four-time member of the Dean's List at Florida State and earned President's List honors for finishing the 2013 spring semester with a 4.0 GPA.

Smith has appeared in 30 of FSU's first 44 games leading the team and the ACC in that category for the third year in a row. The redshirt senior right hander is 4-1 on the season with a 1.65 ERA which ranks second in the league. Smith has 23 strikeouts in 49.0 innings of work and has posted a strikeout to walk ratio of 5.75, while limiting opponents to a .221 average. The Tallahassee, Fla., native was named the 2013 ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and is making his second straight appearance on the Capital One Academic All-District IV team. Smith is a four-time Dean's List and three-time President's List honoree at FSU. He was named to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2012 and 2013 and has been recognized on the league's Academic Honor Roll three times.

Delph has appeared in 43 game making 38 starts - 19 in right field and 19 as the Seminole designated hitter. The Bartow, Fla., native is hitting .289 and ranks third on the team with 12 doubles. He has served as the leadoff hitter in 38 of 44 games so far this season and is reaching base 37 percent of the time when leading off an inning. Delph is a two-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2013. He was honored on FSU's Dean's List three times and in the spring of 2013 he earned President's List accolades.

Stewart leads the team in average (.362), hits (50) and home runs (7) and second in runs scored (35), doubles (13) and RBI (36). He also leads the ACC in overall average and second against league foes hitting .372 in 20 games. The Yulee, Fla., native ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in eight offensive categories, while also leading in on-base percentage (.475) and slugging percentage (.609). Stewart has reached base in all 37 games this year and has put together the second longest active streak in the nation of reaching base in consecutive games at 64. He recently accepted an invitation to play with the USA Collegiate National team this summer. Stewart is a two-time member of FSU's Dean's List and is an ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree.

Academic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
