Rhode Island Game Notes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Top-ranked Florida State (33-7) wraps up its two-week home stand this weekend as the Seminoles take a break from ACC play to host the University of Rhode Island (26-16) in a three-game series beginning Friday, April 27.

URI enters the weekend series winners of three in a row and 16 of its last 19 games, while the Rams currently sit atop the Atlantic 10 Conference with an 11-4 record. Florida State and Rhode Island will meet for the time on Friday.

Florida State's weekend series against Rhode Island marks the Seminoles' second and final first-time opponent FSU will face during the regular season this year. FSU had never faced North Georgia College before the two schools squared-off in a mid-week game on April 18. The Seminoles blanked the Saints 6-0 for their fifth shutout of the season.

FSU has fared well when facing a team for the first time posting an all-time record of 179-46 (.796). The last time the Seminoles faced a first time opponent (other than this year) was in 2010 when FSU played three schools including LeMoyne during the regular season and Central Connecticut State and Oregon in the NCAA Regional in Norwich, Conn.

Florida State has posted a record of 14-5 against non-conference competition this year. The Seminoles have registered a mark of 7-0 against non-conference schools outside the state of Florida posting series sweeps against Hofstra and Maine, while shutting out North Georgia College in their only meeting against the Saints. FSU is 5-3 in games decided by three runs or less against non-conference foes this year.

Although Florida State has never faced Rhode Island, the Seminoles are no strangers to the Atlantic 10 Conference, the league in which the Rams are affiliated. Over its 65-year history, FSU has faced eight other schools that are current members of the A-10 posting a combined record of 44-1-0.

The most wins have come against Richmond (20-0) and Saint Joseph's (14-0), while the lone loss came against Saint Louis (1-1) in the 1965 College World Series. Duquesne was the last A-10 school FSU faced sweeping a three-game series from the Dukes in 2008.

Florida State will send out the same weekend rotation that was used during the three-game sweep of the Miami Hurricanes. Freshman Brandon Leibrandt will take the mound on Friday for FSU with fellow freshman Mike Compton making his 11th start of the season on Saturday. Junior Scott Sitz will hit the hill on Sunday in his second weekend start of the season.

All three games will air live over the internet on Seminoles.com All-Access. Fans can listen to the games locally on 1270 AM (Friday - 6:00 p.m.) and 100.7 FM (Saturday - 6:00 p.m. & Sunday - 1:00 p.m.) and online at Seminoles.com. Live stats will be available via gametracker, while fans can always receive in-game updates on Twitter @FSU_Baseball.
