TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State's Casey Smit was named the ACC Player of the Week for the first time his career after leading the Seminoles to a 4-0 week that included a three-game ACC series sweep of Notre Dame.
Smit started at shortstop in all four games in place of Justin Gonzalez, who missed the week due to flu-like symptoms. The Tampa, Fla., native recorded at least one hit and one RBI in all four games en route to hitting a team best .471 for the week.
Smit highlighted FSU's six-run eighth inning last Tuesday night to lead the Seminoles past Florida Gulf Coast as his two-run single broke a 3-3 tie. On Friday against Notre Dame, the senior had the walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th to give the Noles an 8-7 victory. He also unloaded on his first collegiate home run early in the game, a two-run shot in the third, and finished with a career-high four RBI.
In Sunday's doubleheader, Smit recorded his second career three hit-game to tie a career-high in game one while reaching base in four of his five plate appearances. In the second game, Smit once again came through with the key hit lacing a two-run single to right in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie giving FSU the lead for good.
For the week, Smit registered the go ahead base hit in three of FSU's four games including his first career walk-off hit against the Irish on Friday night.
Smit and the top-ranked Seminoles are back in action Tuesday night in Tallahassee as Florida State faces Florida for the third and final time during the regular season this year. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. and will air live on ESPN3.
