TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Riding a six-game winning streak and a victory over intra-state rival Florida in Jacksonville this past Tuesday, fourth-ranked Florida State (20-4, 6-3 ACC) returns home for an ACC weekend series against Virginia Tech (18-9, 4-5 ACC) beginning Friday, April 2 at 6:00 p.m. on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.
The Seminoles have won nine straight in the series and 24 of the last 25 games against the Hokies, while FSU leads the all-time series 33-5 including a mark of 23-4 inside the friendly confines of Dick Howser Stadium.
Since Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2005, FSU is 13-1 against VT including a perfect 8-0 on their home turf outscoring the Hokies 60-22. April 21, 1989 (7-5) marked the last time Virginia Tech defeated Florida State in Tallahassee. The last win for Virginia Tech in the series came on March 18, 2006 in Blacksburg as the Hokies defeated the Seminoles 9-7.
These two schools met last year in Tallahassee with the Seminoles taking all three games of the series outscoring the Hokies 29-10. In 2009, Jason Stidham hit .700 over the three-game sweep as three of his seven hits went for home runs. He finished the weekend with seven runs, five RBI and four walks. As a team, the Seminoles hit .333, while the pitching staff posted a 2.00 ERA allowing just six earned runs in 27 innings of work.
Stephen Cardullo is a career .563 hitter against Virginia Tech with two doubles, one home run and four RBI. Ohmed Danesh has hit .364 in eight career games with two home runs, a double, triple and eight RBI. Tyler Holt has hit .308.
Geoff Parker has fared well against the Hokies over his career. In two appearances including a start in 2009, the right hander has thrown 11 innings giving up just three earned runs, 10 hits and just two walks, while striking out 15. Parker struck out a career-high nine in 6.0 innings in 2009.
Entering this weekend's series against the Hokies, Florida State Hall of Fame head coach Mike Martin is just one win shy of reaching career victory No. 1,600.
