March 6, 2014

Game Notes vs. Maryland

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Second-ranked Florida State (10-1) begins its campaign for an eighth straight ACC Atlantic Division title this weekend when the Seminoles open league play on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium against Maryland (8-2).

The three-game series begins Friday, March 7 with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m. Game two on Saturday is at 2:00 p.m. with the game time for Sunday's series finale now at 11:00 a.m.

This weekend's series will mark the final ACC regular season meeting between these two schools as Maryland moves to the Big Ten for the 2014-15 season.

Florida State leads the all-time series 66-6 including a mark of 33-3 in Tallahassee. The Seminoles have won two straight over the Terps and 45 of their last 48 games including 22 of their last 23 on their home turf. Florida State head coach Mike Martin owns an all-time mark of 62-6 against Maryland.

FSU took 2-of-3 from Maryland in College Park last year winning games two and three by one-run apiece. The Terrapins won the series opener against the Noles last year, 5-3.

The Seminoles have never lost an ACC series to the Terps - a streak of 22 straight series victories. FSU's .917 winning percentage over Maryland is the second highest among ACC opponents trailing only newcomer Pittsburgh as the Seminoles have won all previous 19 meetings against the Panthers.

Florida State is 20-2 all-time in series victories when opening ACC play. This weekend will mark the sixth time that the Seminoles and the Terrapins will face each other to begin league play. FSU has won the previous five series against Maryland sweeping all but one (1994 - 2-1). The Noles are 14-1 during that span. This marks the first time since 2008 that the two schools will open league play against each other.

The Seminoles had never lost an opening series in the ACC, a string of 17 consecutive series victories, until 2009 when the Seminoles dropped two of three from Boston College. A year later FSU suffered its second straight ACC opening weekend loss when the Seminoles dropped two of three from Virginia in Tallahassee.

Since joining the ACC back in 1992, FSU has posted an all-time record of 54-9 on opening weekend in league play. Before the series loss to BC, the last time the Garnet and Gold lost a game in an opening ACC series was on March 15, 2002 at Virginia. Florida State will open league play at home for the 21st time since joining the league in 1992.

The Seminoles will send out the same starting rotation for the fourth consecutive weekend with Luke Weaver going on Friday, Brandon Leibrandt on Saturday and Mike Compton throwing in the series finale on Sunday.

All three games against Maryland will be streamed live over the internet on Seminoles.com All-Access. Audio for the weekend series will also be available through the All-Access player. Locally fans can listen to the games on 1270 AM (Friday & Sunday) and 100.7 FM (Saturday). As always, fans can receive in-game updates on Twitter @FSU_Baseball.
