Game Notes vs Georgia

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Third-ranked Florida State (4-0) returns home this weekend to face Georgia (1-3) in a three-game series on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium beginning Friday, February 21 with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m. in game one.

The Seminoles have outscored the opposition 42-9 through the first four games reaching double-digit runs in three of those four contests. FSU is hitting an ACC-best .346 as a team, while its staff ERA sits at 2.31.

Florida State and Georgia are renewing its rivalry this weekend after a two-year hiatus. The two teams last met during the regular season in Athens back in 2011 as the Seminoles took two out of three from the Bulldogs. All three games in 2011 were decided by two runs or less.

Florida State leads the all-time series 36-25 including a mark of 20-12 inside Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles have won seven of the last eight games in the series including five straight on their home turf.

Only two Seminoles on the current roster have faced Georgia in their careers including senior captain Justin Gonzalez and senior southpaw Brandon Johnson. Gonzalez is a career .273 hitter in six games against UGA with six hits including a home run, six runs, four RBI and four walks. Johnson has just one appearance against the Bulldogs with that coming in 2011. He faced just two batters as both walked and scored.

The Seminoles will welcome back a familiar face on the Georgia roster this weekend as Jess Posey, the younger brother of Buster and Jack Posey, makes his first return to Dick Howser Stadium since watching his two older brothers play at Florida State. Jess has started all four games for Georgia to start the 2014 season and is hitting .188 with two runs and four RBI.

Scott Stricklin is in his first year as head coach at Georgia after serving a nine-year stint at his alma mater Kent State. Stricklin led the Golden Flashes to the College World Series in 2012.

Florida State's weekend rotation got off to a great start to open the 2014 campaign following the three-game sweep of Niagara. Luke Weaver, Brandon Leibrandt and Mike Compton each picked up a win while posting a 0.00 ERA. The Seminole trio combined to throw 17 shutout innings allowing just five hits and four walks, while striking out 15.

The Seminoles will look to replicate that performance this weekend against the Bulldogs as FSU will send out the same rotation of Weaver (Friday), Leibrandt (Saturday) and Compton (Sunday).

Georgia has not gotten off to the start they would have liked under Stricklin losing three of their first four games heading into this weekend's series. The Bulldogs lost two of three from Georgia Southern in Athens to open the season followed by a 10-7 loss against Kennesaw State this past Tuesday.

UGA has shifted its weekend rotation a little bit for week two sending southpaw Ryan Lawlor to the mound on Friday followed by right hander Sean McLaughlin (Saturday) and then lefty Patrick Boling on Sunday.

All three games this weekend will air live on ESPN3 with Tom Block and Chip Baker providing all the coverage all weekend long. Audio for all three games will be available through Seminoles.com All-Access. Locally fans can listen to the game on 1270 AM (Friday) and 100.7 FM (Saturday & Sunday).
