Game Notes vs. Jacksonville

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 9 Florida State (3-0) will look to build off its opening weekend series sweep of Rhode Island on Wednesday, February 20 when the Seminoles welcome Jacksonville (1-2) to Tallahassee for the first of two meetings between these intra-state rivals.

Wednesday afternoon's game marks the 157th all-time meeting between these two schools as FSU leads the all-time series 119-37. The Seminoles enter the game winners of five straight over the Dolphins including three in a row in Tallahassee.

Justin Gonzalez has fared well against JU over his career as the senior captain has hit .412 in seven games with seven hits including a home run. Jose Brizuela batted .400 in two games, while John Nogowski went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI in his only game against the Dolphins last year.

The series has been closely contested as of late with 12 of the last 18 games decided by three runs or less including seven of the last eight.

The Seminoles swept the season series in 2012 claiming a 16-9 victory at home followed by a 3-0 shutout in Jacksonville.

FSU pounded out 14 hits and drew 13 walks in the 16-9 victory in Tallahassee as it marked the most runs scored by the Seminoles in the series since the 2006 Athens Regional when the `Noles defeated JU 18-0. Luke Weaver made his first career start in that game and lasted just 1.1 innings as he allowed six runs on three hits in earning a no decision.

In Jacksonville, six Seminole pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout as FSU broke open a one-run game scoring twice in the ninth for the 3-0 victory.

JU head coach Terry Alexander, who earned his B.S. in physical education from Florida State in 1977, has announced that he will retire at season's end following 34 seasons at Jacksonville. The Seminoles will honor coach Alexander in the fourth inning of Wednesday's ballgame.

Wednesday's game will air over the internet on Seminoles.com All-Access, while live stats will be available on gametracker. Audio will also be available through the All-Access player, while locally fans can listen to the game on 1270 AM. Fans can always receive in-game updates on Twitter @FSU_Baseball.
