POST-GAME QUOTES: FSU 6 BCU 5
June 3, 2011
Head Coach Mike Martin
"It was a battle. That's all I can say. You are behind a couple and you go up a couple and they tie it and then a young man that has not pitched very much for them comes in and does a great job in the seventh and eighth. We just kept plugging away and I'm just very pleased with the way our young men hung in there. It's always tough in any game of this importance but our guys approached it like they have approached every game with the idea that it is a 27 out ballgame."
"I was pleased with the way Boomer (Brian Busch) pitched, Daniel (Bennett) pitched, Raffy (Rafeal Lopez) did a great job behind the plate. It was just a good win for us no doubt."
On Brian Busch
"When you see two innings and then four straight zeroes you know he has had a very effective outing. Brian is a guy that just enjoys playing baseball. Deep down he thinks he should get some at bats - believe me he won't."
On Mike McGee's Game Winning Hit
"We are first and third and one out and Michael is at the plate. It entered my mind to squeeze. And it didn't stay very long. Michael has been to two College World Series and he's played in four regionals. I had all the confidence in the world at that moment with Michael at the plate. And with Rammer (James Ramsey) on deck I felt good there. You can keep on going, too - I like the next hitter also. I like all of our guys. You are talking about a guy who was the two way player of the year last year. He is All-ACC. The guy is who you want at the plate in that situation."
Catcher Rafael Lopez
(on Brian Busch's pitching appearance)
"Brian did a great job like he always does out of the pen. He was on. He located his fastball. He was pretty effective; he did a great job."
Relief Pitcher Brian Busch
On coming in a regional situation
"Basically I was just trying to come in a get that one guy out to switch the momentum back over to our side. It seemed like it took a little while to score some runs but our guys came through like they always do."
Bethune-Cookman Head Coach Mervyl Melendez
"I thought our guys fought hard. I thought Scott Garner did a good job on the mound. He got in trouble, he got out of trouble. He gave up a couple two or three runs on bloop hits. What can you do? When things don't go your way, you just gotta keep fighting and we made it into a game. We fell behind. We were on top in the beginning, we fell behind and we came back and tied the ballgame. When the ball sometimes doesn't bounce your way there's nothing you can do."
On FSU reliever Brian Busch
"I thought he was really good, to be honest with you. I think he was the difference in the ball game. When you have an offense that I guess kept coming back like we did...you know stropping our momentum is what he did. He is a little tough to hit. He comes three-quarters, you know the ball's got some run to it. I thought him being in the ball game was the difference because I think we could have scored more runs and we could have done a little more damage at the plate."
Bethune-Cookman First Baseman Ryan Durrence
On his night at the plate that included 2 home runs and three hits
"Obviously we have been working on a game plan that coach (Mervyl) Melendez set up and we tried to stick to that tonight...Everybody followed the game plan. We were right there, just a couple hits away."
