May 29, 1998 OMAHA, Neb. -- Catcher Jeremy Salazar belted two home runs, including a grand slam, but it was not enough to lift the Seminoles as Arizona State took advantage of six Florida State errors to win 11-10. Arizona State took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as centerfielder Rudy Arguelles reached on a throwing error by shortstop Brett Groves and scored on a basehit third baseman Andrew Beinbrink. The Sun Devils added another run in the fourth as leftfielder Dustin Delucchi and scored a wild pitch by FSU starter Wes Crawford. Florida State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Salazar. Arizona State took advantage of three Seminoles errors and a three-run home run by catcher Greg Halvorson to score six runs in the fith inning and take an 8-2 lead. The Seminoles closed in on ASU's lead in the bottom of the fifth as a Jose Zabala walked to force in George Otero and centerfielder Brian Cox ripped a two-run single. Salazar's grand slam home run in the sixth inning gave FSU a 10-8 lead. Salazar finished the day with six RBI. ASU first baseman doubled and scored on a ground ball out by shortstop Michael Collins. The Sun Devils tied the scored on a wide throw to the plate by rightfielder Matt Diaz and second baseman Willie Bloomquist walked and came home on a Scott Proctor wild pitch. Right-hander Jon McDonald (10-4) surrendered three runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief as he took the loss for the Seminoles. ASU's Chad Pennington hurled 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Sun Devils. Pennington struck out four batters in the outing.
