Brian Cox Ties Record

Brian Cox Ties Record

May 22, 1998

TALLAHASSEE, FL-- Centerfielder Brian Cox drove in a career-high five runs on six hits, including a grand slam home run, as he led Florida State (51-18) to a 27-6 win over Delaware (43-10) in the Seminoles second game of the NCAA Atlantic II Regional.

Cox tied Luis Alicea for the Florida State single-game hit record with his 6-for-6 effort. Alicea recorded six hits against Southern Miss in 1985.

FSU's 27 runs were the most the Seminoles had ever scored in an NCAA post-season game and the most the team has scored this season. Florida State's six home runs were also a season-high.

Delaware jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with rightfielder Kevin Mench's first home run of the day.

The Seminoles cut the Fighting Blue Hens' lead to 3-2 as designated hitter Terry Henderson walked and came home on a ground ball by Kevin Cash and rightfielder Matt Diaz doubled and scored on a basehit by leftfielder Karl Jernigan.

FSU broke out for 10 runs on seven hits in the third inning to take a 12-3 lead. Third baseman Jose Zabala singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Henderson to tie the game. The next eight batters reached base as FSU put up nine more runs. Diaz contributed an RBI-double, Cox belted a grand slam and catcher Jeremy Salazar followed with a solo homer in the inning.

"It just goes to show you how crazy this game is," said head coach Mike Martin. "Mench hits a home run and there were concerned looks on our players' faces. Then we came in the dugout and the guys realized we had 27 outs left."

Salazar ripped his second home run of the day in the fifth inning, a three-run blast to centerfield, as he finished with three hits and four RBI on the day. Diaz blasted a two-run shot in the same inning for his 17th home run of the season to tie the FSU freshman home run record. Former Seminoles J.D. Drew (1995), Frank Fazzini (1983) and Paul Sorrento (1984) each also hit 17 home runs in their freshmen campaigns.

Right-hander Chris Chavez (8-4) surrendered five runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings as he picked up the win for FSU. He struck out one and walked on in the outing.

Delaware's Chris Frey (8-2) surrendered 12 runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings in the loss. Frey struck out four and walked four in the appearance.

Leftfielder Brad Eyman and Mench hit solo home runs in the fifth and seventh innings for the Fighting Blue Hens.

Zabala and leftfielder George Otero both belted home runs in the eighth inning for FSU.

Florida State will play the winner of the Rutgers-Oklahoma game tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
