DURHAM, N.C.-- Left-hander Danny Borrel held the Seminoles to three runs on six hits in a complete game as he led Wake Forest (41-21) to a 6-2 victory over Florida State (49-18) for the Demon Deacons first ACC Championship since 1977.
Borrello (3-2) struck out four and walked four in his first start against an ACC opponent. He retired the first seven batters of the game.
First baseman Jon Palmieri belted an RBI-double in the first inning as Wake Forest quickly got a 1-0 lead. Palmieri then led off the third with a triple and scored on a basehit by third baseman Corey Slavik. Slavik came home on a single by catcher Andrew Riepe to increase the Deacons lead to 3-0.
FSU third baseman Jose Zabala walked and scored on a basehit by centerfielder Brian Cox as the Seminoles cut Wake Forest's lead to 3-1. Cox extended his hitting streak to 19 games.
Wake Forest made the score 5-1 on a two-run single by Riepe in the fifth inning. Rightfielder Ben Danosky doubled and scored on a basehit by Slavik in the sixth to add one more run to the Deacons' total.
Second Baseman Brooks Badeaux walked and came home on a sacrifice fly by catcher Jeremy Salazar as the Seminoles made the score 6-2.
Right-hander Chris Chavez (7-4) gave up five runs and ten hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched in the loss. Chavez struck out three and walked two in the appearance.
Rightfielder Matt Diaz set a new ACC Tournament record with 14 hits with a single in the ninth inning. The previous record of 13 was held by Bert Hefferman of Clemson set in 1995.
