DURHAM, N.C. -- Top-ranked Florida State defeated Duke, 15-8, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs. After the Blue Devils rallied to make it an 8-7 game in the fifth inning, the Seminoles scored five runs in the seventh en route to their eighth consecutive victory.

The Seminoles jumped out to a 7-0 lead with three runs in the first inning, one in the second and three in the third. FSU took advantage of a hit batter and walk to take a 3-0 lead in the first frame, which was highlighted by Blake Balkcom's RBI-double. After increasing the lead to 4-0 in the second, the Seminoles scored three unearned runs in the third inning. Junior Bryan Zech hit a sacrifice fly and sophomore Stephen Drew had a two-run single in the inning.

Duke got on the board with three runs on three hits in the third inning, highlighted by sophomore Tim Layden's 14th double of the season. The Blue Devils made it a 7-5 game with a two-run fourth inning. Senior Troy Caradonna led off with a double, advanced to third on a single by freshman John Berger and scored on a bunt single by freshman Brian Hernandez. Berger scored the second run of the inning on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Senterrio Landrum.

After FSU scored a run on an RBI-single by Tony Richie in the top of the fifth, the Blue Devils responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior Brian Patrick led off with a double and scored on a single by Caradonna, who made it an 8-7 game when he scored on a groundout by Berger.

Florida State opened up the game with a five-run seventh inning. The Seminoles took advantage of a hit batter, two wild pitches and a Blue Devil error while tallying three hits. Senior Jerrod Brown punctuated the inning with his third home run of the year.

Senior Brian Patrick hit his third triple of the year and his second extra base hit of the day to lead off the bottom of the seventh. He scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Layden.

The 'Noles capped the scoring with two runs in the eighth inning. Senior Chris Hart walked and scored on a single by Drew and after being hit by a pitch, sophomore Danny Wardell scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Brandon Manasa.

Hernandez tied his career high and led all players with four hits in the game. Caradonna (3-for-4, two doubles) and Patrick (2-for-5, double, triple) each scored two runs and recorded two extra base hits in the final home game of their careers. Four players tallied two hits apiece for FSU.

Sophomore Kevin Lynch (3-1) picked up the win pitching two scoreless innings in relief. Layden (0-7) took the loss, giving up seven runs (three earned) in 3.0 innings pitched.

Duke (16-34, 2-21 ACC) will face Maryland (20-32, 6-17 ACC) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the ACC Tournament in Salem, Va. Florida State (47-8-1, 19-5 ACC), which won the regular season ACC championship, will play the winner of the Duke-Maryland game on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
