Hurricanes' second baseman Manny Crespo belted two home runs, including a game-winning three-run blast in the 10th inning, as No. 1 Miami (31-4) defeated No. 7 Florida State (30-11) to complete a three-game sweep in front of 3,867 fans at Dick Howser Stadium.
It was only the second time in the 37-year history of the series that the Hurricanes have swept the Seminoles in Tallahassee.
Reliever Robbie Morrison (1-1) earned the win as he pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out one batter. Laz Gutierrez picked up his first save as he shutout the Seminoles in the 10th inning.
Florida State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on five consecutive hits, including RBI-singles by catcher Jeremy Salazar and designated hitter Terry Henderson.
Crespo used his first home run to cut FSU's lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning. The Hurricanes took a 4-3 advantage in the fifth inning sparked by an RBI-double by catcher Russ Jacobson.
The Seminoles regained a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as rightfielder Matt Diaz belted a two-run homer to centerfield.
Third baseman Aubrey Huff singled and scored on an RBI-basehit by designated-hitter Mike Muller as the Hurricanes tied the score at 5-5 in the sixth inning.
A solo home run by Salazar in the seventh inning gave the Seminoles a 6-5 lead, but Hurricanes' rightfielder Jason Michaels walked and scored on a basehit by first baseman Rick Saggesse to knot the score at 6-6 in the top of the eighth inning.
Right-hander (2-1) Scott Proctor gave up three runs on four hits in two innings of relief as he took the loss for FSU. Proctor struck out three in the outing. FSU starter Wes Crawford struck out four batters and gave up five runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Hurricanes' righthander Darin Spassoff gave up five runs on eight hits in a five-inning outing.
