Hurricane second baseman Manny Crespo hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning as No. 1 Miami (30-4) defeated No. 7 Florida State (30-10), 8-2, in front of 4,439 fans at Dick Howser Stadium.
Right-hander Darryl Roque (8-0) struck out five batters in five innings for Miami as he remained undefeated on the season. Roque gave up two runs on eight hits in the outing.
The Hurricanes trailed 1-0 entering the fifth inning and rallied to score six runs to take the lead. Miami began the inning with three straight basehits, including an RBI-single by shortstop Bobby Hill to tie the game at 1-1. The Hurricanes took the lead as centerfielder Charleton Jimerson scored on an error by FSU second baseman Brooks Badeaux. Hill scored on a sacrifice fly by rightfielder Jason Michaels. Second baseman Manny Crespo capped off the inning by blasting a three-run homer to centerfield off relief pitcher Chris Chavez.
Right-hander Nick Stocks (2-1) surrendered five runs on four hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings of work in his first loss of the season. Stocks fanned seven batters in the outing.
Seminole catcher Jeremy Salazar provided FSU's run production with an RBI-double in the third inning and an RBI-single in the fifth inning.
Florida State out-hit Miami, 10 to 9, but left 12 runners on base.
