Florida State Baseball Falls to Miami, 9-4

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.

Right-hander Alex Santos struck out a career-high 12 batters as he led No. 1 Miami (29-4) to a 9-4 win over No. 7 Florida State (30-9) in front of 4,204 fans at Dick Howser Stadium.

Hurricanes' shortshop Bobby Hill belted three hits, including a solo home run which broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning for the game-winning hit. Right-hander Jon McDonald walked the bases loaded and three runs scored on an error by rightfielder Matt Diaz to give Miami a 5-1 lead in the third inning.

McDonald (6-3) surrendered nine runs on six hits and a season-high eight walks. Five of the nine runs in McDonald's five-inning outing were earned.

Santos (8-0) held the Seminoles to two runs on four hits in seven innings pitched in his eighth win of the season. Reliever Robbie Morrison earned his seventh save of the season as he struck out two batters in 1 1/3 inning of relief.

Rightfielder Jason Michaels led off the fifth inning with a solo home run and finished the day with two RBI. Miami increased its lead to 9-2 in the sixth inning as Hill and leftfielder German Alvarez scored on sacrifice flies by third baseman Aubrey Huff and second baseman Manny Crespo.

FSU left-hander Mike DiBlasi pitched four innings of relief and did not allow a hit or a run.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning as Hill doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michaels and FSU second baseman Brooks Badeaux doubled and stole home.

Rightfielder Matt Diaz had two hitts and one RBI for the Seminoles, including an RBI-single in the eighth inning.
