TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Right-hander John Bentley and the Seminole pitching staff hurled their seventh shutout of the season to lead No. 7 Florida State (30-8) to an 11-0 win over Mercer (19-14-1) at Dick Howser Stadium
Bentley (5-0) held the Bears to just two hits and struck out four batters in five innings to earn his fifth win of the season. FSU relievers Zach Diaz, Mike DiBlasi, Chris Chavez and Scott Proctor fanned a combined seven batters in an inning each of relief.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as centerfielder Brian Cox knocked in a run and rightfielder Matt Diaz contributed an RBI-single.
Florida State scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings sparked by a pair of doubles by leftfielder Karl Jernigan. Jernigan also scored two runs and drove in a run on the night. First baseman Matt Woodward contributed two RBI-singles and DH Kevin Cash scored twice on two hits to add to FSU's offensive production.
