TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Freshman right-hander Nick Stocks struck out nine batters in six innings as No. 12 Florida State (21-7) defeated Morehead State (4-17), 9-1, at Dick Howser Stadium.
Stocks (1-0) allowed just four hits and an unearned run while striking out nine in his first career start as the Seminoles extended their winning streak to 10 games.
Catcher Jeremy Salazar drove in third baseman Jose Zabala twice with a double in the first and third innings as the Seminoles jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Rightfielder Matt Diaz was 2-for-4 with an RBI-double in the fifth inning and centerfielder Brian Cox contributed two hits, including a two-run double in the sixth inning. First baseman Matt Woodward and Zabala each added two hits to the Seminoles offense.
Right-hander John Patterson (1-1) surrendered four runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings pitched in the loss for the Eagles.
Morehead State scored its only run in the sixth inning as first baseman Cameron Langham reached on a fielding error and stole home.
Seminole right-hander Scott Proctor struck out three batters in 1 2/3 innings and has yet to allow a hit or a run in relief this season.
FSU shortstop Brett Groves extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a basehit in the seventh inning.
