TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- No. 21 Florida State (12-7) belted a season-high four home runs and right-hander Jon McDonald struck out a career-high eight batters as the Seminoles defeated UNC Greensboro (6-7), 13-1.
McDonald (2-2) held the Spartans to no runs and three hits in a five-inning outing in his second victory of the season.
Catcher Jeremy Salazar extended his hitting streak to 11 games as he blasted a two-run homer in the first inning to give FSU a 2-0 lead. Spartans' left-hander Corey McDonald then walked four consecutive batters to score centerfielder Brian Cox, giving the Seminoles a 3-0 advantage.
Freshman rightfielder Matt Diaz belted his third home run of the season in the third inning, a two-run blast over the rightfield screen. Diaz finished the day with three RBI.
FSU scored four runs in the fourth inning with a pair of two-run home runs by leftfielder Karl Jernigan and centerfielder Brian Cox.
Third baseman Jose Zabala led the Seminoles with three hits, including an RBI-single in the fifth inning.
Left-hander Corey McDonald (0-1) surrendered eight runs on six hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings as he took the loss for UNC Greensboro. McDonald struck out three batters in the outing.
Seminole relief pitchers struck out seven batters over the final four innings. Mike Smalley gave up a run in the eighth inning, but struck out four batters. Spartan designated hitter John Kincaid struck out, but reached on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI-basehit by leftfielder Linwood Davis for UNC Greensboro's only run.
