TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) - Eighth-ranked Florida State (8-1) pounded out season-highs in runs and hits en route to an 18-2 victory over Maine (3-4) in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles finished with 17 hits as eight went for extra bases including a season-high seven doubles.

Jayce Boyd, Justin Gonzalez, Sherman Johnson, James Ramsey and Devon Travis all recorded multiple hits in game one including a perfect 4-for-4 performance from Boyd and a perfect 3-for-3 performance from Ramsey. Gonzalez, Johnson and Travis each had two hits, drove in two and scored twice for the Seminoles.

Boyd and Ramsey scored three runs apiece to lead all players on Sunday afternoon, while Boyd drove in three runs for his sixth multi-RBI game of the season.

John Holland picked up his first career hit in the sixth on a single to left. John Nogowski, Stephen McGee and Seth Miller each finished with a hit in the win.

The Seminoles received another solid outing from Mike Compton as the freshman right hander went 5.1 innings to move to 3-0 on the year. Compton kept the Black Bears in check through the first five innings allowing just two runners past second base. After giving up a two out single in the second, the Branson, Mo., native retired nine straight Maine hitters before giving up a two out single in the fifth.

"It felt good," said Compton on earning his third victory in as many starts. "I just tried to do the same thing as I did in my first couple starts, just trying to keep the ball in play, don't walk any one, hit my spots and get a lot of groundballs. The defense was spectacular as normal. I know if I let the hitters put the ball in play I am going to have a shot (to get outs)."

The Black Bears clawed out their only runs in the series scoring twice off Compton in the sixth. The runs brought to a close Compton's consecutive scoreless innings streak to 15.2 innings dating back to the first inning of the opening weekend series against Hofstra.

Florida State wasted very little time to take a commanding lead in game one scoring six runs in the bottom of the second off Maine starter Jeff Gibbs (0-2). The Seminoles sent 10 batters to the plate in the second with doubles from Gonzalez, McGee and Miller. Travis registered an infield single to third and Ramsey brought him home on a triple off the fence in right. Boyd closed out the scoring in the inning with a sac-fly to center.

The Seminoles added six more runs in the fourth as the Garnet and Gold batted around for the second time in the game sending 11 batters to the plate. Johnson recorded a pair of singles in the inning with his second hit driving in two. Travis laced a double down the line in left, while Gonzalez roped his second double of the game to left to plate a pair.

FSU pushed its lead to 14-0 in the fifth as Ramsey and Boyd opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. After a fly out moved Boyd to third, Giovanny Alfonzo brought home Boyd on a groundball that the Maine shortstop could not handle.

The Seminoles took advantage of three Black Bear errors in the sixth to add to their lead. Sean O'Brien drew a one out walk and scored, Holland singled to left, Stephen Spradling with hit by a pitch and Boyd drove in his third run of the game on a single to right. A fielding error and throwing error at short on a groundball off the bat of Nogowski led to run, while an error at second base on a groundball by Alfonzo led to the fourth Seminole run of the inning.

Bryant Holtmann worked the remainder of the seven inning game as the freshman southpaw pitched 1.2 scoreless innings. Making his third appearances of the season, Holtmann faced eight batters and allowed three hits.
